IT "Big Guns" Take Aim at the Wireless Enterprise

10th March 2003

The Strategy Analytics report, "IT Big Guns Take Aim: Microsoft & Sun Target the Wireless Enterprise," released today, concludes that with at least one cellular packet data network now available in most developed markets and wireless LAN an unstoppable freight train, the essential catalysts are in place to kick-start wireless enterprise applications. Microsoft, Sun, IBM, HP/Compaq and other IT leaders are positioning themselves as the next set of players to carry the baton in the race for the unwired enterprise.

As the first in a two part series on the "Big Guns" of IT, the report asserts that these dominant players must effectively leverage their huge embedded product and service bases and lay out a clear ROI-centric path for IT professionals to mobilize back-office applications. David Kerr, Vice President of the Global Wireless Practice at Strategy Analytics notes, "Microsoft has largely overcome operator concerns about sharing the stage with the dominant IT vendor of our time, and has demonstrated a clear and compelling roadmap to revenues while effectively driving its case for adoption of wireless from both a device and core application perspective."

"Sun's products are intricately woven into the IT fabric and service delivery structures of many enterprises and most telcos globally. Combine this with the prominence of Java as a programming language and J2ME (Java 2 Micro Edition) as the virtual machine in more cellular phones than any other, and the unique position Sun occupies in driving wireless data forward starts to come into focus," states Cliff Raskind, Director of Strategy Analytics Wireless Enterprise Strategies Service.
