Sony WhiteMagic Display Technology Explained

Sony unveiled the Sony Xperia P at this years Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and its the first smartphone to come with Sony WhiteMagic Display technology.

Sony WhiteMagic ensures that your display is still visible even in high-light conditions, such as in direct-sunlight, while still being hugely efficient. So how does Sony WhiteMagic work  ?

Well, in normal LCD displays colours are displayed using Red Green and Blue (RGB) sub-pixels which are combined in different amounts to form all the colours on the spectrum. When producing White the light passes through each of these pixels in the correct amount !

However, with Sony WhiteMagic display technology you have Red, Green, Blue and White sub-pixels which again combine to produce the colours displayed on screen. When producing White the light can be passed directly through the white sub-pixel which makes the display to up to 50 per cent more bright than standard LCD or LED displays.

WhiteMagic technology can also automatically set profiles dependant on the light conditions by utilising the mobile's light-sensor, which the Xperia P and most mobiles have for use with the camera. The new display technology will automatically switch between high-visibility outdoor mode and low-power consumption indoor mode.
