My wifi problem resolved

My problem was that I couldn't get a wifi connection from my N95 to my wireless Netgear Rangemax access point. It could find the network and make an attempt to connect and just sit there doing nothing, just waiting. If I entered the wrong WEP/WPA key I would get an error telling me the key was incorrect. If i entered the correct key, I got no response and sat about twiddling my thumbs.

I tried the N95 on a friends router who also had WPA encryption, and found that I could connect instantly and without problems on his Netgear router, which is a slightly different version.

The problem it seems, is that the N95 is fussy about some DHCP requests, the process most network enabled devices go through to obtain an IP address so they can communicate with the Internet/a network.

At home DHCP still wasn't working and I couldn't surf

The solution was to specify a static IP address for my home access point.

The good thing is that this configuration is per access point rather per wifi adapter, so you can use DHCP as normal in all situations apart from when it fails to connect.
The networking setup is a nice approach from Nokia, unlike Microsoft Windows where the wireless adapter is defined as DHCP or not, Nokia do it on per access point which is a much more flexible and practical way to go about it. You don't have to keep switching settings and configurations.

To set a static/manual IP address do the following:

Menu > Tools > Settings > Connection > Access Points > *Highlight Access Point* > Options > Edit > Options > Advanced settings > IPv4 settings

Here you will need to change the following from Automatic and enter the following details:

Phone IP address:
Subnet Mask:
Default gateway:
DNS addresses:

If you do not know to set these details manually, you can look at an existing laptop or desktop computer which is connected to your home network and make a note of the common settings.

To do this on your Windows computer, go to Start > run and type "cmd" and click OK. In the black dos prompt, type "ipconfig /all" to display your networking information.

Your Phone IP address should be unique on your network, so if you router/DHCP server has an ip address of 192.168.0.1 you need to set your phone to something like 192.168.0.20. Subnet/default gateway/dns servers settings can all be copied from the Windows computer and entered into your phone - this these settings may vary depending on the type of router and setup you have.

Hope this helps someone, I'm really pleased I got my wifi working at home

Re: My wifi problem resolved

If your getting an error of "unable to connect to gateway" or something similar, it might be that the router your are connecting to is configured in 802.11g mode only.

The n95 (and all mobiles with wifi) use 802.11b. To get it working the router has to be in mixed mode, i.e working on both 11g and 11b.

Re: My wifi problem resolved

all i get is "system error" nothing more that that with the full IPv4 settings in.
before i had them in i got - "no reply from gateway"
My router is a netgear effort and me broadband is cable - sure the router is b, well its the slowest version on b or g.
my router shows my phones is connected, as does my phone - but when i try to browse thats when the wheels come off

Re: My wifi problem resolved

I'd recommend you try with know bad settings as well, to see if you can generate the same or different error message.

e.g. change to the IP settings to ones you know will not work (one at a time)
  • Set an IP address which is not within the range of your network
  • Use the wrong WEP/WPA key

Hopefully by doing things like this and testing them against the correct settings that you know of and get different error messages.

Double check your router settings to make sure it is set to mixed mode (b + g) if your router is just set to "g" then it will still show the phone as being connected but it won't get any internet access.

I personaly would remove all the IPv4 settings you put in and check the router first. 9/10 times it's because most routers nowadays are by default set to 802.11g only

Re: My wifi problem resolved

Could you post your IP details please, and also the IP details of your computer. Subnet, DNS, gateway, etc.

These should be private network address ranges, so are not specific to your computer. Something like 192.168.0.1 or 10.10.10.1. As much info as possible will help.

Re: My wifi problem resolved

ok PC info - ipconfig/all

ip = 192.168.0.3
subnet = 255.255.255.0
default gateway = 192.168.0.1
dns = 192.168.0.1
sdns = 192.168.0.1

i tried these in the phone
ip = 192.168.0.20
subnet = 255.255.255.0
default gateway = 192.168.0.1

to get the dns i looked up on the router
dns = 62.31.64.39
sdns = 62.31.112.39

with these setting i get "system error"

when i use the same dns as the pc = 192.168.0.1
i get "no gateway reply"

when i leave dns as automatic i get "no gateway reply"

when dont set any IPv4 setting i get "no gateway reply"

driving me up the wall, as i have a laptop that uses the wirless connection - tried it with the laptop both on and off too

Re: My wifi problem resolved

When you get home, can you go into the router settings and turn off all the security settings.

The give it a try and let us know how it goes.

Its one of the annoying things about the n95, the "no gateway reply" is a catch all error message

Re: My wifi problem resolved

Indeed, good advice from Graffen.
  • Check that you don't have an authorised MAC address list.
  • Check that any firewall rules which exist are not limiting the outgoing connection
  • Turn off your WEP encryption for testing purposes
  • If you get it working, try and enable WPA if you can (known to work, from my experience at least)
Some observations:
  • If your PC can work with the DNS addresses of 192.168.0.1 then your phone should be able to as well. Since that doesn't help and nor does using the real external DNS, then it points to a problem with the connection and/or encryption.
  • There are at least 2 models of that router, Netgear MR814 and MR814 v2. One of which there is a firmware update for, which may help.

I've searched around for a ping utility, however there doesn't seem to be one available for S60 3rd generation at the moment

Ideally you want this on automatic, since the routers DHCP service will assign you an available IP address.

If it doesn't work on automatic then try as above.

If then your wifi still doesn't work, your phone isn't being assigned an IP address and has no chance of working on the 'net. If you've also got WEP/WPA disabled then this means that for some reason your phone is not receiving the DHCP assigned address due to a timeout.

Make sure no proxy server is defined in the advanced settings for your access point.

Re: My wifi problem resolved

Palastanga im trying to get my WLAN sorted on my n93I I was having the same problem where I enter the WEP key and it comes back incorrect. Although like you when I had my N95 it connected no problem without the need for a key.

Ok so ive gone into settings and access points and there are only 3 listed there. Orange Internet, Orange MMS and Orange GPRS. Do I need create a new account then I take it?

Could you go into more detail on what I need to do for the IPv4 settings

as well as

Phone IP address:
Subnet Mask:
Default gateway:
DNS addresses:

Could you please go into more detail on what to set my phone to? (ip address) Ive copied the subnet and gateway info numbers to my phone. Ive also left DNS settings as well known.

For some reason though still cant get round the wep problem.
