Tick AGPS from Midlets on E1000.... I did it!!!

Hi
Sorry in advance for my english - i'm italian.

I come here to announce ( ) that i've been able to ACCESS AGPS from my test java applet!

The access is gained simply giving unlimted privileges to the java app of interest. One has to hack some internal files, notably J2MEST in the kjava app.

I've made a simple application to automatically hack the file, you just need to download it from the phone. Its name is "Motomu", and its usage is explained within the app itself.
It works with E1000, but i'm beginning to look at other phones privilege mechanisms...

I attach you Motomu and the EmGPS test midlet, both of them with full source code (visual basic for motomu, and java/netbeans for emgps).
If you distribute or modify it, PLEASE mention me ("thenext1") as the creator.

EmGPS JAR and JAD are located in the Location\dist folder of the rar file.
The other folder (MotorolaLocApiSkel) is for developers.
EmGPS should work with other phones as well, though.

The purpose of this "release" is to give whose stopped development of an AGPS app (because of the "Connector.location was denied" error) a way to resume development, and to spread the news as fast as possible (please help me spreading it!) ...
We need to take everything AGPS can give us (and discover other potential obstacles).

NOTES:
- Emgps may be buggy, and I don't yet know for sure how Location api works ...
- I suggest to set the Empgs Timeout parameter to zero.
- Emgps should be compatible with A835 and other agps enabled phones, but it's almost sure that there are other ways to give the app full permissions.
- In italy if the E1000 gets 3G signal, every emgps attempt will cost you some euro cents. Switching the phone to 2G-only networks prevents this (network - network setup - area - "european", but try other settings as well)
- After starting emgps, the phone may need some time to catch the signal ... in the only instance I tested my app, it took about 3-4 minutes to change error messages from "ERR_UNAVAILABLE" to "Too few satellites" (and I was in the old part of the city, with narrow streets and high buildings)

If you have question, I'm here to answer.

p.s.
A big thanks to users of the www.motofan.ru, because even if they didn't notice, I took from there many ideas. Thanks!!!!

Re: AGPS from Midlets on E1000.... I did it!!!

what it does???
i does unlock the AGPS so we can make an applet that uses AGPS directly from the phone ...

there were zillions of debates long 1000 posts each for the agps ... and now it's possible .... where are gone all the long-time agps fans?

do you mean that Locator is connecting to GPS and showing you the correct position? how much time it take to come up with the first position fix?
or do you mean only that is starting up without errors?

I need your feedback.

In any case, please check your traffic... it may be diminished if the phone used info from 3G antennas (for this, i've switched into 2g-only mode and it works)

thanks
bye bye

Re: AGPS from Midlets on E1000.... I did it!!!

Locator Adquiring fix in few minutes (1 to 3), this is variant if coverage is not good... then open Locator screen data.

The soft show the EXACT LOCATION in deg, min, sec or in decimal degrees, as you put in preferences menu.-
You can store this waypoint and put name and symbol.-

If you go another location next to the last you can see as the degrees is a few diferent from the last one.

I have this coordenates:

W: 3.48
N: 40.45

I can see in google that in Torrejon de Ardoz (my city, Madrid, Spain) show geographics coordenates:

W: 3.22
N: 40.28

I think that this values are all OK, then i presume that GPS in Moto E1000 now, and thanks to thenext1 is WORKING PROPERLY.-

If you move to a place without coverage program tells you: "Poor GPS Coverage".

If i can help, i´m here.-
Thanks Landy.-

Mine was set to 2G since the auto mode doesn't work very well in areas with poor 3G reception.

Re: AGPS from Midlets on E1000.... I did it!!!

Hi. I use an apple computer and want to know what the motomu file is about since I cant use it. Also, when I use the software (without motomu) I get this error.... "Status: GPS unauthorizated or not found!" My location icon is on but i dont have an option in the menu to turn GPS on or off. I think i turned it on permanently when i flexed it.

Install only find the place since emgps doesn't work right now.
Download motomu (attacched as .gif, but rename to .rar) and run it .... it's self explaining and has a guided procedure.

I'm not able to get a fix, even with Find The Place, after a few minutes!!!
In 2G and 3G mode.
After a few minutes, the agps icons returns to the normal state (without waves) and the applet is idling....

Did you do some special tricks to get it work?
Even my mates in italy can't get it to work!!!

Re: AGPS from Midlets on E1000.... I did it!!!

Hi,

I tried to get a fix last night and this morning and I couldn't get it also. I suspect that it is because there are lots of clouds in the sky. Yesterday I had a perfectly clear sky.

I always get the message "too few satellites" after 80-82 repaints. After that the midlet goes idle too.

fpb

PS. Perhaps it would be a good idea to use an external gps antenna...

Do you remember what message FindThePlace gives when initially trying to get the first position?
In my phone it says "GPS no response" and after a few minutes it starts idling ...
