Re: Orange Homescrew!!

Presumably there should be options in the menu structure for homescreen and wallpapers. I haven't got a 6680 to play with, but certainly the Orange standard homescreen was rubbish on my c500 compared to the default windows mobile homescreen, but was changeable via these options.

Re: Orange Homescrew!!

I've found out that you can turn it off temporarly by holding down the menu button, which brings up a funny menu and use the navigation key to select telephone. Only down side is u get the home screen back as soon as you press the red disconnect button.

Re: Orange Homescrew!!

Is there a complaints department at Orange? They need to be told NO to making this rubbish so it can be turned off. Think of the upcoming Nokia "N" series. They will be doing the same to these if we do not act!

Re: Orange Homescrew!!

I've now rid my phone of the homescreen crap by having it flashed. Nokia's Active Desktop knocks spots off their pile of crap homescreen.

Re: Orange Homescrew!!

Actually, having just seen the screen grabs of the regular standby, I actually prefer the Orange customisation. Once I changed the wallpaper to "wash", the garish Orange colour scheme was gone, leaving some pleasant shades of grey instead.

Cheers,
Jez

Re: Orange Homescrew!!

Just tried to get my 6680 flashed to generic software at MPRC. They said they can only flash it with the Orange software. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

I'm starting to get very very MAD. So i phone up Orange 3G Support number (350) and ask where i can get this done, as i've just been told no. Basically was told no again!

Then i complained about the stupid Orange homescreen bug, of having missed calls and texts, but the screen not showing this until i unlock the keypad. I was told "This is not a bug". I said it is and many others are having it (after seeing posts on the net). I was once again told "This is a not a bug sir, and as for the people on the internet it is there opinion, not a bug"

I think i'm going to kill someone i'm getting so wound up about this!

Ummm - it's hardly enough to go to those lengths!

Yes it's annoying, but remember until the phone is out of contract it still effectively belongs to orange so you'll have to lump it.

Re: Orange Homescrew!!

I dont see why they cant allow you to just disable the Homescreen. Yes, it is probably useful for technophobes who cant be bothered to read the phone's user manual to have everything they need on the front screen but if you buy the latest phone for how it looks, part of that is the menu and screen design - surely? (or do Orange disagree with that)

Re: Orange Homescrew!!

It's quite obvious why Orange won't allow me to turn it off. They clearly don't want me to renew my contract at the end of 12 months. In that regard, I'll be more than happy to oblige them (I just hope 3 have lost the walled garden entirely by then, or that virgin have launched 3G).

Re: Orange Homescrew!!

Things like this make unbranded-handset sellers very very rich! I'm looking at getting a M5000 when it's released, I just hope it's not got the Orange screen covering half of the windows desktop.
I wouldn't mind it so much if it was at least customiseable, I never use the schedule but alarm access would be alright.

Re: Orange Homescrew!!

I know it's small consolation, but I have found out how to stop the wallpapers from being blurry....

They need to be the same resolution as the photos taken by the phone's camera, so they have to be 1280 x 960, or a proportional resize (ie 668 x 501, 200 x 150 etc etc).

Did by accident by sending desktop picture to phone.

Btw, you need to use the option on the homescreen under the camera option.. it has take pic, gallery and background. At leat it doesn't look like I have glaucoma every time I look at it though!

I would like to know what effing "design brief" orange had. Maybe the guy who came up with it was the same guy who decided all operators on the 3g helpline should know less about mobile phones than my 83 year old grandma.
"Firmware - what's that?".

I actually e-mailed orange about the fuzzy screen problem. I love their reply:

Dear Cathy

Thank you for your mail about your wallpapers resolution.

We're sorry to learn of the problem with your phone. Unfortunately we are unable to advise you regarding this query.

We suggest you contact Nokia either on 09067547540 Monday to Friday 9am to 9pm or at nokia.co.uk

We trust this information is of assistance and are sorry we can offer no further help with this issue. If you have any other questions please call our Customer Service Team on 150 from your Orange Pay Monthly phone or 07973 100150 from any other non Orange phone. Our Helpdesk is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and any of our representatives will be pleased to assist you.

Kind regards

John

Although I know the answer to this question as per above, I thought, well they don't know that. So I emailed him back....

Dear John,
Thank you for your speedy response.

I contacted the club Nokia helpline, but they said that as the Orange Home screen is a third party application, the software manufacturer would need to answer this question.
I would take this to be yourselves, as it is part of the Orange firmware.

Is it possible to investigate this further, please? Or is there anyway that the home screen can be supressed by way of any other third party application?

I wait with baited breath for their next half-baked answer.....

Re: Orange Homescrew!!

OOH, how fast they reply with total rot.

Following reply received from orange

Dear Cathy

Thank you for your mail received in reply.

We confirm the bar is part of the Orange Firmware and as such it's not possible to suppress it with any other third party software.

We trust this information is of assistance and are sorry we can offer no further help with this issue by email.

If you wish to discuss this further or have any other questions please call our Customer Service Team on 150 from your Orange Pay Monthly phone or 07973 100150 from any other non Orange phone. Yeah right. Of course I replied to John:

Dear John,
Thank you regarding the reply re suppressing the Orange Homescreen.

Now that you have confirmed that orange are the manufacturers of the homescreen, not Nokia, could you please confirm at what resolution my wallpapers need to be to prevent them from being blurred, as Nokai have again confirmed that orange should be able to answer this query.

Arse'oles!

Re: Orange Homescrew!!

I think they only way to get the message through to Orange is to call them everytime you are waiting for trains on the way to work e.t.c and complain constantly about this. If enough people did this the message would soon get through as it would be costing them loads to listen to people winging about the homescreen 24x7.

Also hope the homescreen is not on the N70 when it comes out after their months of 'supposed testing'

Re: Orange Homescrew!!

Its not the stretched wallpaper thats the only problem - its Orange robbing us of a main screen designed (by the particular phone's manufacturer) to compliment the phone's overall design. Orange think they know best - well on this they dont - once my contract is up - I'm off (never to return!) The firmware for this has caused every model of phone I've had with it installed to constantly crash, stall and lock ..... Good things happen when you turn your Orange contract OFF !!!!!

Re: Orange Homescrew!!

You know, I know that it's usually the preserve of grannies and people who have "mug" written accross their faces, but maybe we should go to watchdog about this.

My 6630 had relatively few problems on the original firmware, but ever since the homescreen edition has been on ceratin applications won't load/work propertly and I have to restart the phone every few hours as I keep getting the message "Phone memory full".

just a thought.....here's the link....

Re: Orange Homescrew!!

The orange homescreen wouldn't be so bad if it was customisable. Only 1 menu out of it is customisable. And why can't they have a feature to turn it off??

Also, on the nokia N70 all the writing is in grey!! thats no way to show off the lovely screen is it!!

It has been suggested that future versions may have the option to turn it off: http://nokiafree.org/forums/showthre...6&page=4&pp=40
