Guide to unlocking your Z500

A few people have asked so here you go, a guide to unlocking your Z500 from the comfort of your home, and for FREE!
ALL credit goes to reefer45 over at the GSM City forums.
Usual stuff, don't blame me if it destroys your phone, all work under taken at your own risk, however I have tried it myself and it does work, as well as for a lot of people on the other forum. I'll gladly answer any queries if you want to post them here.

What do you need?

Software: WinIMEI 1.16, USB Drivers, EasyStudio (Optional but highly recommended). Links to software are at the end of this post.

Hardware: Computer running Win9x/NT/2000/XP, 1x Serial COM Port, 1x USB Port, 1x USB Data Link Cable(PCB429USE).

1. Extract all RAR archives into own empty folder.

2. Install the drivers for the phone. You only need to install the drivers from the folder Samsung CDMA USB Driver don’t mind the folder Samsung Mobile USB Driver.

3. Connect the phone to the computer using the USB Data Link Cable. If it asks you about drivers just choose to install the driver from a specific location and point it to the Samsung CDMA USB Driver folder or its subfolder.

4. Now run the setup for EasyStudio and install it like any other application. Check what COM port the Samsung CDMA USB Driver has in the control panel under Phone and Modem options. If the port is higher than 10 force it to port 9 or less.

Then go to the Easy Studio Settings Menu and choose Phone Monitor Settings. Look in the COM ports tab and check that the port with the CDMA USB Driver is enabled then press OK. Now it should find the phone. Choose File Manager to the left and then press backup on the top right then choose backup media. This is because WinIMEI might corrupt files. If the phone is not frozen a better option might be to just read the codes with WinIMEI and then enter them manually to unlock it without risk for file system corruption. (Skip this step if you enter codes manually).

5. Now connect the DB9 (partial) loopback connector to COM1. Look at the included picture for info on how to make one. All you have to do is short pin 2 with pin 3 as shown on the picture (look at the red line) and the COM1 port of your computer will now work as a (partial) loopback UART. This is required for WinIMEI to work.

6. Start WinIMEI (QIWS_V1.16(Service)_041011.exe) and on the first screen choose the USB COM port, leave the rest as is and press OK. On the next screen press UNLOCK. If everything went ok your phone is now unlocked! Or if you want to enter the unlock codes manually choose Read Settings instead.

7. Restore your media files with EasyStudio. (If you didn’t press UNLOCK you can skip this step).

8. Done!

FAQ:

Q: Why should i make sure the port in WinIMEI is set to 9 or less?
A: Serial ports in Windows are considered to be standard physical devices, that is why you should open any device in the following way: "\\.\COM10". Using the shortened name ("COM1" or "COM3") you can open only first 9 serial ports. More information on this issue can be found in MSDN.

Q: I can't do anything and it says "Phone Freeze", can I unlock this?
A: Yes! It will unfreeze and unlock your phone!

Q: How do I change the COM port of the phone (To make it less then 10)?
A: Go to 'Control Panel' -> 'Phone & Modem Options' -> 'Modems' tab. Find the 'Samsung CDMA Modem', right-click and then properties. Then click the 'Advanced' tab, then the 'Advanced Port Settings' button. You then have the option of choosing a new port number. If there is no ports less then 10 available, you need to uninstall things or find out the hardwares that are using up these ports and choose one to delete or move to another port.

OK, now step 5 pf reefer45's guide can be quite confusing if you don't know much about computers and/or serial ports. So, an alternative is to get just a DB9 serial cable, either a female to female connector (i.e both sides are the same female connector), or a femal to male. Do not get a male to male (called a null cable), as is no use for this procedure since it will not connect to your PC.
Looking at this picture, you can see the one on the left is a male connector and the on the right is the female connector.

Now that you have your cable, put the female connector into your PC serial port (f you have 2 females, just put any) and now we have to short the other side.
If the other side is a female connector stick a paperclip into the 3rd hole from the left on the top row and the other end into the 4th hole from the left, like so:

Now continue from step 6 of reefers guide.
If the other side is male instead of female, then you have to short it as follows:

I know this is different from the female as you have shorted 2 of the first 3 pins here, as opposed to 2 of the last 3 with the female connector. As I don't have a female to male connector I cant try this out, so if it doesnt work this way just move it over one so its connecting the 3rd and 4th pins from the left.
Now again continue from step 6 of reefers guide.

Reefer45 has also kindly posted another method for unlocking your Z500, however I , nor he for that matter, have tested this so can't guarentee it works, unlike the previous method above.

I myself haven't got a locked Z500 so i cannot try this. But other people confirmed this as working. I'd like to hear more results on this!

I also found a list of service codes. I guess you could use some of them to enter your unlock codes manually(that you read out with WinIMEI).

Hi me again. As above unlocked my Z500. I put an O2 sim (not 3G ) in the phone. Not got mms settings so went on O2 website for settings to be sent. In the drop down box there is not the z500 when choosing model of phone so can't get these settings. Any ideas ???? otherwise no probs.

Ask someone on an o2 network to copy the settings out off of their phone, doesnt really matter which, but another samsung would probably be easier, then figure out where all the details go. I did this for my '3' settings, copied them off my E1000, now I can access the 3 portal and 'my 3' etc, even though my phone is still vodafone branded.

the only problem with using that qualcomm imei program is that its actually for the z105 not the z500. this means that when you unluck the phone you loose the loudspeaker and the sound isnt very loud for ringtones. i know this because i done it when the phone first came out which was bout a month n half ago now but other than that its fine if you dont want your loudspeaker and dont mind the ringtones as loud. :)

Just that this thread will be eternally 'stuck' at the top of this forum, so whenever anyone comes this is the 1st thread they will see.
In this particular case, it just stops people making new threads all the time asking how to unlock their phone, as this thread will always be at the top, even if there hasnt been a new post for a long time.

These following steps give your phone a chance to change operator in your sim card, so you have to follow it each time you change your sim card.

1º power on your phone WITHOUT sim card.
2º write *7465625*28782#
It will show you "Auto Subset Lock: Activated!"
3º write *7465625*28638#
It will show you "Auto Network Lock: Activated!"
and that's all folks!!

Yea, it works fine. However there is also a Z500 winIMEI out now, which there wasn't at the time I wrote the orignal post, so you can look for that. But like I said, the Z105 one works fine.

I got as far as 3 but it returns a message saying Network lock: already exists! Help?
With a cable it unlocked fine :)

Hi, I'm having trouble unlocking my phone, I've tried without my SIM in with the codes and its come up with auto subset lock activated and auto network activated, then put my SIM in (which is O2) and its come up with the network 3 background and unregistered SIM on the display, can any of you help out with this problem?

Have you shorted the two pins as described in the first post and used the program? You can't just use the code.

I used an old Ericsson cable which only has 3 wires - luckily 2 of them were the right ones, I connected them and unlocked no problem.

The pins you need to connect are pins one and two of the serial port on the PC as described (with photos) in the frist post of this thread. The pins are nothing to do with the phone or USB and if you connect these two pins your phone will be recognised.

I apoplogise mate, it was actually done ages ago, I've just completely forgotten about it. However, I have a firmware that I've edited myself (originally DTEJ3), which is now completely unbranded and supports fullscreen wallpapers!

I have a huge problem with my friends Z-500. He is using a Telia (Sweden) sim card. I promised him that I would unlock his phone, in return of an small amount of cash.

I started his phone, without a sim, and filled in the codes:

It all worked fine.
I shut down the Z-500 and inserted my sim: Halebop (Sweden).
The phone asked me to fill in my PIN. I typed my PIN and pressed OK.
It all worked fine. The phone was just a bit slow at first.
Then to make him convinced that it worked i borrowed one of my friends sim, wich also is Halebop. And it worked.
Then he said like this: "Ok, well it all seems to work properly. Tonight I'm going to order a new Halebop sim-card."

Here comes the problem:

He inserted his Telia-sim and started the phone. After using the phone in about 15 seconds the phone hangs up. What would I call it, it freezes. Theres nothing I can do. Not push a button or anything.
He said: "Well this happens sometimes, but it's kind of rare."
He took out his battery (he couldn't turn the phone off the correct way because the phone has freezed) and put it in again.
After about 15 seconds the same **** happens again, and again, and again, and again.

Someone very kind who has an solution to this?
He is pretty angry at me, and I'm feeling pretty bad about it.
I destroyed his phone.

I've tried to put the locks back to original but it doesn't work.

I've tried to use another sim.

I've tried to use IMEI (and all those steps that refeer45 described)


A thing I haven't tried is to flash the firmware. Beacuse I don't know how to do it.

Nothing works!

My girlfriend was given a z500 by her mum, (o2 to o2) but it's saying "unregistered sim" - I've bought a serial cable and followed all the above instructions but with no joy. When using "QIWS_V1.16(Service)_041011.exe" I don't get the option to change the com port. I've been doing a botch job and using a tweezers on the serial cable (female - male) does it really need a crocodile clip??? I've been trying to sort this for a couple of hours and am getting bored now. I resent paying someone else to unlock this unless it's really necessary. Can anyone offer any advice?

Unregistered SIM means the SIM has not been registered - phone O2 and they'll register it for you.

You don't need to unlock an O2 phone to use an O2 SIM - only if you want to use another make of SIM.

but now my vodafone account has been activated i cant call anyone.
it says call barred when i try. I looked in my phone settings but the call barring options are all off. does anyone know how i can fix this.

I have done it (introducing all the codes provided in this forum without the sim) and it worked, but after i introduced the card again and the sim's pin, it asks me for the sim lock password, does anybody can help me with this? I really need this as soon as possible.

The problem is that when I insert the code: #7465625*28638# = Auto Network Lock OFF, it says that is disabled, than I insert the code: *#7465625# = Check Locks it says Network lock on. All the other locks stay off after I insert the codes.
Than I insert the sim card and the problem is that it asks for a sim lock password.
Does anybody knows any other way to resolve this?:confused: :confused:

didi you got a cable to recharge the phone o a pc??(standard in the z500 package) if so

download these programs

extract the first copy and copy/move the second in the same folder

connect the phone
start the program, select com port 3(or 4)
select samsung
select z500
press the read button

the code it returns is the code to unlock the "features" of the phone

so if it returns 1578200 you have to type #7465625*628*1578200# to unlock the network lock(note that there is a network lock and a auto network lock these 2 are not the same

connetcting pin 2 and 3 on the com port is not neceseary for this

and agent8max is there any response on the phone or is it realy dead(try connecting it to pc and open it just in case the on.off button/function doesn't work)
and where did you get the firmware as i'm going to debrand my phone in a few day's to so i know what firmware is broken(or at least one of em)

and for the people only having tho comport connection on the main board (and not the actual port at the rear of your computer)

It doesn't work.I got 2 codes -MCK+Netlock Nck.
When I entered them I got the message that phone is freeze-deactivate fail.
We talk about Z300 phone.
I was also trying that method with pins-didn't work either.
I connect the phone to the PC and I see the PC icon on the phone and the Samsung CDMA modem appears working correctly under the device manager (with COM 4 being assigned for it).The only thing is-the moded quiry don't bring any results.I downloaded and installed Easy Studio and there under phone monitor settings -COM Ports it says COM 4- Enabled -USB.
I have a COM 1 port on the rear of my PC ,so I insert the copper wire that connects (shorts) pins 2 and 3.Sort of put a knot between them.
I also downloaded and installed Quakcomm Unlocker.And there's an application -UMTS IMEI Program-QIWS MFC with some strange looking "koreans" letters after that.So I get the error message-Can't open COM 1!!! So I choose Z300.Where it says-"USB COM Port" is greyed out,so I can't choose anything and also in Buyer I choose [00]Only IMEI and then
I click OK and get a new big screen and then press Unlock and then it says
Check serial communication-wait...then Retry and then it says Check the serial communication with the phone and something else that is not seen and then Serial Com.-NG (I guess it says something in between-God knows what).And it also says FAIL in the right lower box.
So that's the story.
Any ideas?

abrodski try my previous post (http://www.3g.co.uk/3GForum/showpost.php?p=229200&postcount=53) it should work with the z300 (the app does list it)but i dont have one i can confirm that it works under the Z500V

and Marcordeiro you don't have to thank me try blaming your old provider for letting you do this in the firts place(or samsung for making those lokcs possible)

right, im a little bit confused. my z500 is currently locked to vodaphone.

i typed in the code for auto sim lock activate... my blyk sim didnt work in the phone.

so then i tried the auto sim lock deactivate... my blyk sim again didnt work in my phone.

and where it says ... *6565265*code*# or whatever, what exactaly is meant by the "code"?
