Style & Handling Summary

Like a basketball player this phone is tall and thin, which is good for including a well-sized number pad but bad for small pockets.

User Friendliness Summary

The big keyboard is easy to use, but the lack of a touch-screen means you can’t navigate around the phone that quickly.

Feature Set Summary

The i200 lacks Wi-Fi and is short on software to boost Windows Mobile.

Performance Summary

The i200 is solid and sound, but don’t expect too much of the two-megapixel camera.

Battery Power Summary

With up to seven hours of talktime and 300 hours of standby, this handset should see you through a solid day unless you really thrash the 3G.

Cons
No touch-screen, no Wi-Fi and short on exciting extras.
Verdict
This phone will do if you need a workhorse, but not if you want some excitement from your smartphone.

Full Review and Specification for the Samsung i200 Review

Samsung’s i200 doesn’t bother with advanced hardware or software. It comes with the standard Windows Mobile 6.1, and the hardware lacks the little extras and tweaks that make it look and feel a bit different.

This is not to imply that the i200 is a bad smartphone. It just does its job without trying to be flashy or clever.

Samsung i200 - Tall and thin

Think basketball player and you get an idea of the general size and shape of the i200. No, it isn’t over seven feet tall, but in smartphone terms, it is taller than the average. It is quite thin too, and this profile means that in smaller hands it can feel a little unwieldy.

The tall profile, however, does mean that there is room for quality in both screen and keyboard. The screen measures 2.3 inches corner to corner, and the number keys are big and well constructed. They are easy to use at speed for typing out SMS messages or mobile email.

Samsung i200 - Microsoft Word

The i220 comes with Office Mobile pre-installed. This includes a PowerPoint viewer and editing capability for Microsoft Word and Excel documents. While the number pad works well enough for writing short texts, we’re not so sure about using it to edit email attachments or other documents in Word and Excel format.

Samsung i200 - 3G is handy

The on-board 3G data speeds are very useful. The i200 supports data connections of up to 3.6Mbps, so browsing the web is a pretty speedy experience.

There is also a front-facing camera built-in for two-way video calling.

The absence of Wi-Fi will really grate with data-hungry users, though, and the two-megapixel camera’s average quality won’t call out to photography fans. These two issues more than any others mark the i200 out as an entry-level Windows Mobile smartphone.

Samsung i200 - The verdict

This is a smartphone with a tall and thin profile that helps with screen visibility and a large, usable keypad. But even that can’t make this a mobile email device for people who need to be constantly in-touch. And the lack of Wi-Fi could prove to be a problem too.

The i200 has to be classed as a smartphone for those who just want the basics. It does a good job of providing those, but anything beyond that will have to be sought elsewhere.
