Europe : A web site entirely focused on Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) technology, the 3GPP global standard for fixed-mobile convergence, was unveiled. The site, www.umatoday.com, is dedicated to providing the latest news, information and discussion on UMA-based services, products and events. Earlier this week, France Telecom/Orange announced its UMA-based Unik service will be deployed in France, Spain, Poland, UK and the Netherlands. This follows recent announcements from Telecom Italia for its UMA-based Unico service as well as from TeliaSonera for its UMA-based HomeFree service offering. With these global mobile operators announcing UMA-enabled dual-mode cellular/Wi-Fi handset services, the market for UMA products and services is taking off rapidly. In addition, ABI Research recently released a report stating that by 2011, there will be over 330 million dual-mode cellular/Wi-Fi handsets shipped in the market. Keith Nissen, senior telecom analyst with In-Stat, said: "Now that service has launched from Orange, Telecom Italia and TeliaSonera, UMA is clearly a leading technology in converging mobile and fixed networks. The availability of UMAToday.com as a focal point for the industry to rally around is an important step in the market development of UMA technology." Initial sponsors for www.umatoday.com include Cisco Systems, Motorola Networks, Reefpoint Systems, Netrake and Kineto Wireless, all companies with products supporting the UMA standard. For sponsorship information, or for information about posting materials to the site, please contact info@umatoday.com. About UMA Technology By deploying UMA technology, mobile operators can deliver a number of compelling fixed-mobile convergence services. The most well-known application of UMA technology is dual-mode cellular/Wi-Fi handsets, which enable subscribers to automatically roam and handover between cellular networks and public and private WLANs. |
