Global Seminar of 3G Network Deployment and Operation
5th September , 2006

ASIA Hong Kong : "Global Seminar of 3G Network Deployment and Operation", co-organized by Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. ("Huawei") and PCCW (“PCCW”), was successfully held in Hong Kong, China at August 25, 2006. The seminar was attended by experts from PCCW, Huawei, Ovum analyst & consulting firm, and more than 10 mobile operators. The forum addressed the development of 3G markets and the construction of UMTS networks. It also probed into the global deployment and operation of UMTS/HSDPA networks.

PCCW, the largest provider of communications services in Hong Kong, plays an industry-leading role in information and communications technologies. The mobile communications service, offered by PCCW Group companies, is committed to continuing to optimize its 3G network, product offers and service performance. In May this year, PCCW introduced the breakthrough mobile TV broadcast technology, a significant innovation that uses Cell Multimedia Broadcast technology which allows continuous broadcast feed of TV programming over a 3G network and is able to support large number of concurrent users.

Excellent network performance, especially the high-quality radio signal, high rate of successful handover, and low call drop rate, is well tested and confirmed by third-party evaluation reports. Based on R4 Mobile Softswitch and UMTS new generation Node B which can support full performance HSDPA, enables the smooth evolution to HSPA and MBMS.

"Although the environment of Hong Kong is very complex, PCCW has achieved world-leading performance in network coverage, system stability and service provision. Excellent network and high quality service experience are the key to PCCW's leadership," said Ian Stone, CEO of SUNDAY Communications Ltd, (a PCCW service).

"We always focus on our customers' market challenges and pressure by providing innovative 3G network solutions for PCCW," said Mr. Zhang Shunmao, Senior Vice President of Huawei and President of Wireless Networks. “In competitive 3G market such as Hong Kong, efficiency is the key to success. Huawei has stuck to the principles of fast and economical network construction, in order to consistently create maximum value for customers. ”

Mr. Craig Skinner, Senior Consultant of Ovum consulting company said. ”Asia Pacific operators and subscribers are leading the development and demand for new services, the 3G network of PCCW is a good example about its service operation and network deployment. PCCW and Huawei have developed a world leading performance 3G network in probably the world’s most difficult radio and commercial environment.”

Together with PCCW, experts from the Asia-Pacific, Middle East, North Africa, and Europe also probed into service provisioning and network deployment regarding network planning, network optimization, as well as network construction. All the attendees commented that the Opex and Capex would be greatly saved through the introduction of the UMTS new generation Node B, mobile softswitch technology, and IP-based transmission. They also pointed out that PCCW's experience regarding service operation and network deployment in Hong Kong, plus the strategies of combing 2G/3G, set a good example for mobile operators worldwide.
