Europe
: Polska Telefonia Cyfrowa is the first Polish mobile operator to
have started market tests in Warsaw with corporate and private customers
of high-speed data transmission on the UMTS/3G technology platform.
The development is a major breakthrough on the Polish telecommunications
market.
Transmission
rates under the UMTS system reach 384 Kbit/s. thus providing new quality
in, among others, Intranet and Internet access as within dedicated
networks. In the future, it will also enable television picture transmission,
videoconferencing as well as two-way voice and video calls.
The testing
installation involves over 1000 of PTC’s clients. As indicated
by global trends, 3G telephony will be initially utilised by business
clients mostly. And so in Warsaw, it will be Era’s corporate
client representatives, but also individual frequent data transmission
users who will be the ones testing the 3G telephony capabilities.
“With
the launch of 3G telephony within the Era network we are – above
all – offering immense educational value. A great stride forward
is being made on the road of building Information Society in Poland”,
said Boguslaw Kulakowski, the PTC Management Board President. “As
a result, Poland finds itself in the select group of 20 countries
with available UMTS standard telephony. Polska Telefonia Cyfrowa has
been consistent in investing all of its funds and earnings into new
services and technologies. Thus, it should come as no surprise that
the market leader turns out the first to launch UMTS in Poland.”
PTC continuous
the leadership in establishing new trends on the mobile technology
market in Poland. For the first time, PTC presented 3G technology
in 2001. First call with the usage of UMTS technology was made by
PTC in September 2001. In September 2002, PTC’s first video
connection was presented to the public. In January 2004 PTC signed
an agreement with Siemens which became the supplier of the solutions
for the construction of an UMTS network in Warsaw and its vicinity.
The capital of Poland, Warsaw, is the first stage in the establishment
of the UMTS network by PTC. According to the UMTS licence granted
in 2002, by the end of 2007 the network should cover at least 20%
of Poland’s population. PTC is the first telecom operator in
Central and Eastern Europe to provide UMTS.
