Europe
: Lucent introduced a cost-effective, high-capacity base station with
a reduced footprint called the Lucent Flexent® CDMA450 Modcell
ES ( inset ), its newest CDMA2000 base station for
the 450 MHz spectrum band (CDMA450).
Zapp
in Romania is deploying the Modcell ES as part of its CDMA450 network
expansion, which will include the introduction of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO
data services such as high-speed Internet and Intranet access, videoconferencing
and other multimedia applications at speeds of up to 2.4 Megabits
per second (Mbps) -- among the fastest data speeds available in Europe
-- to businesses and consumers. (Please see accompanying Zapp press
release.)
Part of Lucent's
Bell Labs-developed OneBTS® family of base stations, the Flexent®
CDMA450 Modcell ES' footprint is 40 percent smaller and provides the
same capacity as Lucent's previous high-capacity CDMA450 base station
model. The Modcell ES is designed for service providers requiring
a high-capacity solution to offer comprehensive coverage in high-use
urban and suburban environments. It also enables NMT (Nordic Mobile
Telephone) 450 service providers to smoothly migrate their analog
networks to advanced, third-generation (3G) networks that provide
digital voice and mobile high-speed data services.
"Lucent helped
create the market for CDMA450 and we continue to introduce innovative
products and solutions that enable CDMA450 service providers to offer
high-quality voice and high-speed data services that are comparable
to, or exceed the best available anywhere in the world," said
Mike Iandolo, vice president of CDMA product management, Lucent Technologies'
Mobility Solutions Group. "The CDMA450 Modcell ES, with its support
for 1xEV-DO, can help CDMA450 service providers such as Zapp distinguish
their mobile offerings, and help bridge the digital divide by providing
universal access and world-class service to underserved populations
and regions."
The Flexent®
CDMA450 Modcell ES also can provide in-building and rural coverage
and fill in network coverage gaps, and its smaller footprint also
saves on real estate and operational support costs. It supports both
CDMA2000 1X and CDMA2000 1xEV-DO technology, and also will support
push-to-speak and IP (Internet Protocol) backhaul capabilities.
Lucent, the first
to deliver CDMA450 solutions globally, has deployed commercial networks
in 450 MHz spectrum for Delta Telecom and Moscow Cellular Communications
-- both part of the SKYLINK initiative in Russia -- Zapp in Romania,
Uzbek Telecom in Uzbekistan and Vietnam Power Telecom, and is conducting
numerous CDMA450 trials with customers around the world.
Lucent and Zapp
are demonstrating live over-the-air data transmissions at speeds of
up to 2.4 Mbps using the Modcell ES at the 450 MHz Digitalisation
conference, taking place Sept. 8-9 at the Marriott Hotel in Bucharest,
Romania. Advanced services such as video instant messaging and streaming
video are being delivered via laptops and personal digital assistants
(PDAs).
A global leader
in the development of commercial 3G spread-spectrum solutions, Lucent's
Mobility Solutions Group has deployed CDMA2000, CDMA450, and W-CDMA/UMTS
networks with more than 30 mobile operators on the continents of North
and South America, Asia, Europe and in the Australia/New Zealand region.
Lucent also is collaborating with major UMTS/W-CDMA operators in Asia,
Europe and North America on the development of their 3G networks.
Lucent has deployed more than 90,000 spread-spectrum base stations
for mobile operators worldwide, of which 50,000 are already supporting
3G services.
