3G Junction Box Eases Connectivity

9th September, 2004

US : Junxion and Novatel Wireless announced a strategic partnership to accelerate the market introduction of Junxion’s newly released mobile connection gateway solution called the Junxion Box™.

The Junxion Box is a portable device that, for a large number of applications, makes it easier and more practical for computers to connect to the Internet through high-speed wireless data networks operated by carriers including Sprint, Verizon Wireless, AT&T Wireless and Cingular Wireless.

Inside the device, Junxion’s proprietary firmware creates a bridge between a standard wireless PC card modem inserted into the Junxion Box’s external PCMCIA card slot (“wireless WAN”), and computers connected to the Junxion Box through either wireless (802.11) or wired (Ethernet) LAN connections (“wireless/wired LAN”). Also, multiple devices can simultaneously connect with the Junxion Box, allowing for local area network routing.

The Junxion Box represents a new device category, creating a substantial number of new end-user applications for both existing wireless data services (1xRTT, EDGE) and the new higher-speed 3G technologies (1xEV-DO, UMTS, OFDM, etc.) that are being deployed by wireless carriers worldwide.

Wireless PC card modem manufacturers including Novatel welcome the Junxion Box in the marketplace. Anticipating that the device will drive incremental sales of carrier data service subscriptions and PC card modems the U.S., Novatel plans to support Junxion with industry partnerships and other resources that support Junxion’s business development, product development and marketing initiatives.

“We are excited at the prospects of working with Junxion as they release their new product,” said Brad Weinert, VP of Business Development at Novatel Wireless. “We see Junxion fulfilling a real need in the wireless data market with their device and we also see this as an opportunity for incremental revenue for our products as well as a source for new data service activations for wireless carriers.”

While the Junxion Box supports PC card modems from all major manufacturers, Junxion sees its Novatel partnership as a timely endorsement of Junxion and its products.

“Novatel is an extraordinarily valuable strategic partner for Junxion right now because they are on a serious winning streak and our interests are completely aligned. They are already a leader in the wireless PC card modem market, and have recently scored big carrier wins domestically and internationally with their new UMTS cards,” said John Daly, Junxion’s Vice President of Business Development and Marketing. “Also, Novatel has announced that it will supply a new 1xEV-DO card to Verizon in the second half of 2004 in support of Verizon’s national network upgrade to 3G technology. This gives Novatel a highly influential market position just as ‘true’ 3G data is finally deployed on a large scale.”

Junxion Names Trio Teknologies U.S. Distributor
Junxion products will be delivered to the market by Trio Teknologies, the leading wireless data solution “value-added distributor.” TrioTek is a national master agent for Sprint, Verizon Wireless, AT&T Wireless and Cingular Wireless, and a distributor for the market leading providers of wireless specific middleware and hardware solutions. TrioTek’s network of more than 500 enterprise-focused dealers within the U.S. provides Junxion with access to thousands of potential end-user customers.

“We are excited about our distribution agreement with Junxion. The Junxion Box represents the next step in wireless data evolution as we have the convergence of Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) and Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN) technologies in one box providing a unique and compelling solution to numerous mobile or static vertical applications,” said Trio Teknologies’ President Gordon Dahl. “End-users with 802.11 equipped laptops and handhelds can essentially use the Junxion Box as a mobile wireless access point. It provides group network access anywhere the Carriers have coverage on their national CDMA and GPRS networks.”

Junxion is working closely with TrioTek to provide resellers and end-customers with product awareness, order fulfillment, customer support and other services required to successfully launch and expand the market for Junxion’s mobile connection solutions.

“Access to TrioTek’s 500 or so wireless solution resellers represents an extremely efficient way for Junxion to quickly identify, reach, and supply Junxion Boxes to large numbers of customers representing the core of our initial market opportunity,” Daly said. “Teaming up with TrioTek will help us to establish an early leadership role in the mobile connection gateway market.”

Junxion Boxes Shipped To Customers
Junxion kicked off its commercial growth phase as a result of one final milestone: sales of Junxion Box units to customers representing select market segments, including: government, education, large enterprise, small/medium business, professional services (e.g. consulting, CPA and law firms), and construction management.

“The Junxion Box solution is really a breakthrough resource for competitive construction management teams. Making it easier to connect to various cellular data services, combined with LAN functions, is anticipated to be a better way—sometimes the only way--to provide the data infrastructure that is needed at job sites, even in remote locations," said Jessica Hickey, Sr. Project Manager/Value Specialist of Olympic Associates Company. The 50 year-old firm chose the Junxion Box to support projects located throughout the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii.

Customer applications of the Junxion Box vary widely, including portable networks for mobile work teams and events, mobile networks, fixed/permanent connectivity and redundant/emergency connectivity. Scott Schramke, Lecturer & Senior Computer Specialist at the University of Washington Information School, made his Junxion Box purchase to support both individuals and teams in the field.

“Our faculty and staff need hassle-free Internet connectivity while off-campus. While existing CDMA wireless data service networks offer the connection speeds and coverage we need today, the Junxion Box makes it much easier for diverse individuals to get connected using virtually any laptop computer,” Schramke said.

Junxion Equipped For Growth
Partnerships with industry leaders like Novatel Wireless and Trio Teknologies encourage accelerated market acceptance and adoption of the Junxion Box, enhancing Junxion’s competitive lead in this new category of wireless data solutions.

“We are right on track with our market entry strategy, and the market timing couldn’t be better,” said David Hsiao, Junxion’s president. “The large wireless carriers have begun to deploy 3G wireless data network technologies in earnest, and Junxion looks forward to helping customers fully realize the utility of those networks.”
