3G UMTS PN Scanner

Europe : Rohde & Schwarz has developed the compact measurement system UMTS PN scanner for UMTS network planning and the setup of 3rd generation mobile radio networks. Consisting of measurement hardware and software, the system can be connected to a PC or laptop for tests.

Owing to its compact size, the Radio Network Analyzer R&S TSMU allows unprecedented mobility. In combination with Measurement Software R&S ROMES and a GPS navigation system, UMTS base stations can thus be tested for transmit power and base station density.

The measurement system is connected to the PC or notebook via a FireWire interface in accordance with the IEEE 1394 standard. UMTS signals are detected by the scanner, analyzed and then graphically displayed on a map.

In many places, the implementation of UMTS mobile radio networks is already in full swing. In Germany, too, UMTS base stations are tested in practical use. Rohde & Schwarz has developed the UMTS compact measurement system specifically for this purpose. It consists of a UMTS version of Measurement Software R&S ROMES, a Radio Network Analyzer R&S TSMU and a GPS navigation system.

The R&S TSMU – featuring a convenient size of 150 mm in width, 80 mm in height and 170 mm in depth – is characterized by exceptional performance. It weighs merely 1.5 kg and has a power consumption of only 1 A at 12 V operating voltage, as is required for mobile and portable systems.

The test system measures all RF parameters of the UMTS network. The actual carriers of the UMTS signal, the pseudo noise (PN) codes, are detected and their power, scrambling code, quality parameters or S/I ratio and timing determined. All data can be instantly analyzed or stored for subsequent processing. Numerous different display modes ensure that UMTS parameters and power supply quality are clearly presented.
