Bermuda Takes 3G Wireless
16th September 2002

Bermuda Digital Communication announced that it has entered into an agreement with U.S. based Commnet Supply offering wireless technology solutions, to build a new, third-generation (3G) CDMA2000 wireless network. The new multi-million dollar network is due to launch March 1st 2003 and is based on the same 3G technology recently deployed by U.S. giants Sprint, Verizon and KDDI of Japan.

Under the terms of the agreement, Commnet Supply will supply CellularONE with Lucent Technologies wireless network equipment, software and professional services to build a CDMA2000 1x mobile network with Islandwide coverage. This technology will greatly increase its mobile network's voice capacity and provide Internet data-transmission speeds of up to 153 kilobits per second to wireless devices such as PDA’s, Cellular Phones and PCs/Laptops.

Kurt Eve CEO of CellularONE stated, “We searched the world for the most advanced and economically feasible network. The GSM technology was considered, but decided against it, as it was a sideward step for us and eventually we would have to deploy W-CDMA technology in the future. This means that with Commnet and Lucent we advance to 3G saving millions of dollars and a few years ahead of plan. Simply, we get to 3G faster and have a couple of years advantage over our competitors”

“The increased voice capacity afforded by the new network will enable CellularONE to meet the expected subscriber growth outlined in their strategic plan. It will also allow CellularONE to continue to launch innovative and advanced personal communication services, such as high-speed instant messaging, wireless Web browsing and e-mail, which positions CellularONE firmly at the forefront of wireless services in Bermuda. Both their CDMA2000 1x and TDMA networks will coexist allowing the company to utilize its existing radio frequency spectrum and towers” said Alejandro Gil, Commnet Supply’s VP of Sales for Caribbean and Latin America.

While the network is impressive, most noticeable to the CellularONE customers will be the full colour screens on phones, wireless access to the internet which allow for fun and useful applications like photo messaging, email and personalization downloads such as screensavers and polyphonic ringtones. “For the last couple of years everyone has been impressed with advancements seen in Japan and Korea and we are working diligently to bring the same level of sophistication to the wireless market in Bermuda” says CellularONE’s Marketing Manager John Narraway.

Lucent's 3G wireless networks will provide CellularONE with significant investment protection because the Lucent equipment will support future versions of 3G CDMA2000 technology, giving CellularONE the ability to expand its network as needed and increase the data speeds to 2.4 MB per second in the future.
