US : The launch by Telstra of its high-speed mobile broadband service across Australia is a major success not only because this massive undertaking was completed in record time of just 10 months, and ahead of schedule, but also underlines the position of WCDMA-HSDPA as the world’s leading 3G mobile system. GSA – the Global mobile Suppliers Association, congratulates Telstra in meeting the challenge of covering Australia’s vast expanse in record time, showing leadership while at the same time joining the true global mobile community. According to GSA research, 121 networks across 55 countries have committed to deploying HSDPA. The launch of NEXT G, Telstra’s name for the new service, brings Australia into an international community of 39 countries where HSDPA-enabled services are commercially available, and raises the number of commercial networks to 65. GSA expects the number of commercial HSDPA networks to reach 85 by the end of this year. Alan Hadden, President, GSA said: “More than half of 123 commercial 3G/WCDMA networks in service today have also launched HSDPA, which is rapidly becoming mainstream. HSDPA is the industry baseline for delivering the full mobile broadband experience. For the customer it means delivering broadband services to the screen of your choice, any service, any screen, anywhere”. HSDPA is the first evolution of WCDMA, delivering advanced mobile multimedia services with typical data throughputs for the user of 1.0 – 3.6 Mbps, according to individual network capabilities and the device being used by the customer. HSDPA delivers fast data access for such as music and video downloads, file sharing, large email attachments, web surfing, streaming services, more efficient mobile working, and more. HSDPA means a similar customer experience to fixed line with the added value of mobility. For mobile network operators, HSDPA delivers improved network efficiencies, lower cost of delivery, increased revenues, and more competitiveness. The Telstra WCDMA-HSDPA network operates at 850 MHz band and enables mobile broadband services over a wide geographic area covering 98% of the population. Customers benefit from automatic global roaming capabilities with other GSM operators throughout the world. The latest GSA
survey confirms that 66 HSDPA-enabled devices have been launched.
Twenty of these devices operate in the 850 MHz frequency band, in
support of network deployments including those by Telstra, Cingular
Wireless (USA) and Rogers Wireless (Canada), as well as potentially
many more markets throughout the Americas, Asia and elsewhere. |
