China's Spectrum Develop 3G Mobile Phone Chipset

18th October , 2004

ASIA : Spreadtrum Communications has announced the development of its in-house developed 3G mobile phone chipset, which will do away with the long-standing monopoly that foreign companies have over the technology.

Released in early August this year, the chipset adopts a 0.18-micron digital/analog signal solution, integrating digital baseband, analog baseband and power management into one baseband chipset.

Inset above shows Dr. Ping Wu, President of Spreadtrum Communications signing agreements with handset manufacturers.

Phone designers worldwide would otherwise use three different chips from transnational suppliers to separately control these three functions.

The company claims that, when compared to mainstream solutions, the new chipset is two-thirds smaller, has up to four times the data transmission rate and costs 50 percent less.

Currently, only a few other companies worldwide have mastered in-house 2G and 2.5G cellular phone chip technologies. These companies include TI, Lucent, Infineon Technologies, Philips and ADI. Qualcomm and TI are able to produce 3G chips.

Jiang Shoulei, head of the Shanghai Integrated Circuitry Industry Association says the development of the new chip will help push forward the industrialization of TD-SCDMA-which is the country's first communication standard for 3G mobile telecommunication.
