QUALCOMM
congratulates EPM-Bogota of Colombia, a company belonging to Empresas
Publicas de Medellin, on its commercial launch of third-generation (3G)
services through its AirNet service for the city of Bogota. EPM-Bogota
recently commenced 3G services based on CDMA2000 1X at a launch ceremony
held on October 2 in Bogota.
"The
addition of the CDMA2000 1X network to the current PHS network will
provide us with the capability to meet the demands of a growing customer
base
and give those clients a service with exceptionally clear voice quality
and
faster Internet services," said German Mejia, commercial vice president
of
EPM-Bogota. "With 3G services, EPM-Bogota will be able to deliver
cost-effective solutions that will not only lower operating and capital
costs,
but will also provide a more reliable and faster service."
"EPM-Bogota
will now be able to benefit from a 3G wireless system that can
provide more capacity for voice traffic, along with high-speed data
capabilities," said Jeff Jacobs, president of global development,
QUALCOMM.
"The adoption of this technology will position EPM-Bogota as a
leader in their
market for voice communication, and will provide them with the flexibility
to
deliver wireless data, which is especially promising as Internet users
and
content increase."
EPM-Bogota
began operations five years ago with a PHS wireless network and
began evaluating a variety of wireless technologies in 1998. After a
process
of careful evaluation, the company decided to migrate to CDMA. Currently
EPM-Bogota has 89,000 lines that will allow for advanced CDMA wireless
services. The company plans to continue expanding throughout the city
of
Bogota.
There
are now 19 carriers who have launched 3G CDMA services in nine
countries. 3G services are available through local carriers in Latin
America
markets such as Puerto Rico, Brazil, Chile and now Colombia. QUALCOMM
supports CDMA2000 1X with chipsets and system software that offer a
variety of
advanced features, including multimedia and position-location technologies.
