O2 UK Launching 3G LTE Trials
1st October , 2009
Europe : O2 UK has put motions in place to start 3G LTE trials in the UK. Telefonica which owns O2 UK will also conduct similar trials in Europe ( Czech Republic and Germany ) and in South America ( Latin America, Brazil and Argentina ).
O2 UK and Telefonica foresee 3G LTE providing maximum mobile speeds of around 335 Megabytes per second in ideal network conditions. There are operator benefits such as 3G LTE flexible frequency spectrum management allowing for frequency allocation where most needed e.g. when the Olympics are on in London and demand for 3G LTE mobile and mobile broadband services soar due to demand.
The 3G LTE trials will commence shortly and last six months involving the installation of e-node Bs base stations and comprehensive 3G LTE network tests. The tests will provide a good footing and understanding of how Telefonica can roll out 3G LTE networks to its 265 million users worldwide.
The idea behind the trials is for O2 UK and Telefonica to select partners to implement and rollout its 3G LTE networks across the world. The 3G LTE suppliers involved are ZTE, Nokia Siemens Network, NEC, , Huawei, Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent. In April this year, Telefonica demonstrated a VoIP 3G LTE call over a 3G LTE mini network and achieved speeds of over 140 Mbps which was 10 times faster than 3G HSPA networks currently.
