Europe : The picture with the way forward for 4G becomes a lot clearer. True 4G technology will be branded as “IMT-Advanced” and submitted as such at the ITU Geneva meeting this week. This was confirmed by the CEO of 3GAmericas, Chris Pearson.
Last week, the 3GPP Partners ( representing the world’s leading 370 mobile companies ) formally requested that 3G LTE ( Long Term Evaluation ) Release 10 and 3G LTE Advanced are considered for IMT-Advanced.
The official body which is responsible for the classification of 4G wireless systems called IMT-Advanced is the ITU-R ( Radiocommunication Sector ). 3GPP has included the IMT-Advanced specification details within LTE via LTE-Advanced and Evolved Universal Radio Access (E-UTRA). The approved specifications for LTE-Advanced could be available in 2011.
Another technology standard could be offered to be included as part of IMT-Advanced is Mobile WiMax.
It is expected to be mid to next decade before OFDMA-based systems like LTE have a large percentage of subscribers, and it could be well toward the end of the next decade before any IMT-Advanced system has a large subscriber base. Needless to say, vendors and operators will be looking at how to leverage and enhance current OFDMA systems like LTE and WiMAX to meet the requirements of IMT-Advanced and future demands of mobile broadband subscribers.
"Spectrum is the oxygen needed to fuel the successful deployment of LTE, so success is contingent upon operators worldwide obtaining more spectrum," Pearson added. "However, LTE will be launched in 2010 and 2011 to address the market needs over the next decade. Subsequently, operators may deploy IMT-Advanced '4G' networks using LTE-Advanced technology."
