Europe
: Speaking at the MIPCOM TV market in Cannes, Endemol's Chief Creative
Officer Peter Bazalgette ( inset ) revealed Endemol's
plans for two mobile phone 'channels' as well as the launch of 'Endemol
Mobile' - a new prototype division in the UK.
Endemol is first
planning to launch an Extreme Reality Channel. This will feature a
non-stop parade of the bizzarrest and weirdest video clips from the
world of entertainment. It is due to showcase in the coming months
on a variety of mobile outlets around the world.
Endemol intends
to follow this with a Comedy Channel that will be made up of short,
funny, brilliant comedy clips that the audience can dip in and out
of for a guaranteed laugh.
The new 'channels'
will launch through partnerships with mobile phone operators. Their
themed, branded packages of entertainment will be drawn from Endemol's
international library of content and reversioned for mobile. Both
'channels' will be broadcast on a loop, and updated weekly.
Meanwhile in the
UK, Endemol Mobile will be headed up by Morgan Holt, reporting to
Endemol UK's Director of Digital Media, Peter Cowley. The new division
plans to produce original made-for-mobile content. This will include
Ten for Ten, a new game accessible via a mobile video short code in
which a series of non-stop video questions give viewers a chance to
win £10 in an instant.
Peter Bazalgette
comments: "This is all about new ways of entertaining people.
It doesn't make us a channel owner in the conventional TV sense -
the plan is to work with commercial partners to bring our archive
to mobile phone users. And Endemol Mobile is a resource designed to
create tailor made content for both mobile and broadband. We plan
to establish this new division in the UK first and then replicate
it across the international group."
The news follows
Endemol's recent deal with Orange to supply content for its own mobile
reality channel in the UK, kicking off with Endemol's sports reality
blockbuster The Match.
It also comes
after a period in which Endemol has seen considerable growth in the
take up of its offering to mobile users. In 2005 Big Brother has had
more then 6 million streamed minutes and 500,000 downloads across
Australia, Italy and the UK. Endemol Italy has also produced content
for its hit soap Vivere (Living) for retransmission through mobile
networks. In France, Star Academy Plus and extra editions have also
proved extremely popular. In the UK, Endemol drama series Totally
Frank has unique bite-sized 'mobile episodes'.
