Brazil
: South Korea’s second biggest mobile phone manufacturer - today
announced that it has signed an agreement to supply 200,000 CDMA handsets
to Vivo, the largest wireless service provider in Brazil.
The agreement
marks the latest milestone in Pantech’s expansion into Central
and South America, one of the world’s fastest growing markets.
It follows the recent announcement of the company’s deal with
America Movil SA, the largest wireless communications solutions provider
in Mexico, for the supply of 500,000 GSM handsets in Latin America
this year.
Sung-Kyu Lee,
President & CEO, Pantech Co., said: “Brazil, whose GDP is
projected to rival that of the leading world economies in coming years,
is the place to be, given our ambition to build up our operations
in what is the largest handset market in Latin America. We look forward
to expanding our infrastructure in Brazil over the coming months.”
Under the terms
of the agreement, Pantech will supply three of its flagship models
to Vivo, including the PC-1000L, a CDMA model with a compact, intenna
design featuring a 330,000-pixel VGA CMOS camera. Pantech plans to
supply at least 130,000 handsets to Vivo by the end of this year.
Pantech has already
provided GSM handsets to Claro and TIM, the second and third largest
wireless service operators in Brazil. Pantech Group - composed of
Pantech Co., Pantech&Curitel Communications, Inc. and Pantech
C&I Inc. - plans to increase its total handset exports to Brazil
to more than 500,000 units, including 3G mobile phones, in 2006.
Vivo, which is
jointly controlled by the Portugal Telecom and Telefonica Moviles
groups, is one of the leading mobile service operators in the southern
hemisphere. With 28.4 million mobile subscribers, Vivo accounts for
38% of Brazil’s 74 million handset market.
Pantech’s
expansion in the Brazilian market is part of a wider process where
the company is steadily building up its presence in the so called
‘BRIC countries’ - Brazil, Russia, India and China. The
company already has operations in all of these regions.
