Commercial Launch of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO

23rd October 2003

US : QUALCOMM Incorporated congratulates KDDI Corporation, Japan's second largest wireless service provider, on its commercial deployment of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO services and applications in metropolitan Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka. The third-generation (3G), high-speed data network, marketed under the name CDMA 1X WIN, will be available to customers beginning November 28, 2003.

CDMA 1X WIN represents the first commercial CDMA2000 1xEV-DO deployment in Japan and KDDI will be the sixth operator worldwide to deploy a commercial CDMA2000 1xEV-DO network, joining operators in the United States, South Korea and Brazil. The new high-speed wireless data networks will enable consumers to access exciting new services and applications via CDMA2000 1xEV-DO-enabled devices. Using CDMA2000 1xEV-DO-enabled PC cards and handsets, subscribers can take advantage of a download service called EZ Channel, which allows users to quickly download large files from 15 channels that offer various applications, such as music, movies, fashion, sports, news and electronic novels. Subscribers will also be able to use their CDMA2000 1xEV-DO-enabled handsets to monitor real-time traffic and weather in various locations where KDDI operates remote cameras.

"KDDI is providing consumers in Japan with access to the same compelling, high-speed wireless services that are being offered in other parts of Asia, the United States and South America," said Dr. Irwin Mark Jacobs, chairman and CEO of QUALCOMM. "As the first operator in the world to deploy a nationwide gpsOne position location service, KDDI, which also offers BREW-based applications and services, is leading the way in making wireless connectivity and mobility solutions available to the world's most sophisticated wireless users. The high-speed data capabilities of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO will enable KDDI customers to get the latest music, trends and information in a way that accommodates their fast-paced lifestyle."

"We are proud to be the first operator in Japan to deploy a commercial CDMA2000 1xEV-DO network," said Tadashi Onodera, president of KDDI Corporation. "The rapid subscriber growth and demand we have experienced for our CDMA2000 1X services demonstrate that consumers are looking for applications that simplify their lives, giving them instant access to information they need."

KDDI plans to expand nationwide coverage of its CDMA2000 1xEV-DO infrastructure by Fall 2004. Last month, KDDI announced that it had exceeded 10 million subscribers on its CDMA2000 1X network, which it launched in April 2002. CDMA2000 1xEV-DO is a data-optimized evolution of CDMA2000 that provides peak rates of more than 2 Mbps. QUALCOMM supports CDMA2000 1xEV-DO with a broad range of chipsets and system software solutions, such as the MSM5500(TM), MSM6500(TM), MSM6550(TM) and MSM6800(TM). These highly integrated chipsets enable a variety of wireless devices, including wireless handsets, camera phones, PDAs and PC cards for use in laptop and handheld computers, and an array of applications meeting the needs of businesses and consumers. QUALCOMM's CDMA2000 1xEV-DO solutions harness the true value of high data networks by supporting the advanced feature set of QUALCOMM's Launchpad(TM) suite of technologies, encompassing advanced multimedia, connectivity, position location, user interface and removable storage capabilities.

CDMA2000 1xEV-DO is compatible with cdmaOne(TM) and CDMA2000 networks, thus leveraging existing networks, and enabling operators to obtain higher capacities and superior performance by optimizing for packet data services.
