Samsung Launches EDGE Wireless Phone

ASIA : SAMSUNG that it will launch an EDGE phone, which is based on asynchronous 2.5th generation technology, in Southeast Asia, Europe and the U.S.

The company introduced the phone for the first time at CeBIT 2004 in Hanover, Germany last March, and it will launch its first commercial product (Model name: SGH-P710) through Globe Telecom, a major mobile operator in the Philippines, next week.

EDGE, consisting of 2.5th generation GSM technology, has a maximum data transmission rate of 384 Kbps - three times faster than GPRS - and offers vastly improved data telecommunication features.

The EDGE phone to be supplied to the Philippines operator by SAMSUNG Electronics is a typical clamshell phone with 180-degree rotating VGA camera. In addition to various camera-related value-added features such as continuous shooting, framing, and a self-timer, it offers MPEG4 video shooting and transmission features.

The video images captured by the camera phone can be used as video wallpaper.

With SAMSUNG Electronics' additional plans to launch a slide design EDGE phone in Europe (SGH-D500E) in November and in the U.S. (SGH-P777), the company will introduce a total of three or four EDGE phones worldwide before the end of this year.

As SGH-D500E has various multimedia features, including a 1.3 megapixel camera and an MP3 player, it will pose a great opportunity for SAMSUNG Electronics to strengthen its technological competitiveness in Europe. The SGH-P777 supports instant messaging features as well as 1.3 megapixel camera and an MP3 player.
