Europe : Genuine mobile internet services today became reality for Telstra mobile customers with the launch of "i-mode (R)", built on NEC's mobile internet platform and handsets.

Today, NEC released the first of a series of handsets to be manufactured for Telstra along with the platform construction of the i-mode service.

Telstra is Australia's leading telecommunications carrier and a world-class fully integrated, full service provider across wireline, ADSL, HFC, satellite and digital wireless networks and platforms. Telstra has more than 10 million household, business and wholesale customers.

i-mode, an integrated solution using a unified services and business model, will see Telstra deliver its customers a gateway to mobile internet services not yet experienced in Australia.

Telstra in partnership with NEC, will, via NEC's mobile internet platform technology and handsets, provide the key that unlocks i-mode in Australia and change how Australians use their phones.

Leading the world in the deployment of i-mode solutions, services, platforms, handsets and content, reinforces NEC's position as the only company with the expertise to deliver the full i-mode package along with value added services for now and the future.

NEC's involvement with i-mode dates back to March 1999 when NTT DoCoMo developed the world's first mobile internet service in Japan.

i-mode's resounding success, operator driven business model, high speed user access, integrated mobile suite of solutions and unrestricted access to global content are some of the key reasons behind Telstra's decision to introduce the service using NEC's mobile internet technology and handsets.

NEC in conjunction with Telstra have taken to deploy the service and a chance for Australia's leading carrier to gain a significant march on its competition and broaden the gap on mobile services delivery.

With the introduction of i-mode, Australians will enjoy email, rich content, picture messaging and video solutions. i-mode handsets will also have directory, location and banking services, news, games and ring tones.

Currently, NEC's mobile internet platform supports more than 45 million i-mode users -worldwide and is operated by COSMOTE in Greece, Wind in Italy, Telefonica Moviles Espana, Bouygues Telecom in France and Taiwan's Far EasTone Telecommunications.

NEC's mobile internet platform is an enabler for the provision of i-mode - one of the world's leading and most advanced mobile internet services. A platform realising unified operations and service management, it is composed of:

well integrated solutions and subsystems and is a gateway that will allow Telstra customers to gain easy, quick, secure access to a variety of rich content offered on GPRS networks.

mail subsystems that enable customers to enjoy functional i-mode mail services with video and picture attachments between i-mode, MMS and PC users via the internet.

portal subsystems which show service and membership content menus on each mobile terminal - offering complete management of user and content services information, agent charging and billing (including real-time for monthly content subscription) while supporting new features released in the future.

The N410i is a compact striking full-scale 1.3M Pixel integrated camera that takes rich pictures.

Featuring a 5.5cm 65K color QVGA LCD display it not only takes high-resolution pictures it also takes MPEG4 movies. Developed based on expertise gained from the Mobile Internet markets in Japan and Europe, the N410i is suitable for accessing mobile Internet applications and rich content, comprising 64 polyphonic ring tones, DoJa(TM) JAVA Applications and USB & IrDA Connectivity.

NEC also provides the N342i, which targets a broader range of people. Equipped with a 300K pixels, digital camera and various camera functions, 4.5 cm large color screen with 65K colors, 40 polyphonic ring tones and JAVA its design is simple, stylish and friendly.

NEC has been making significant inroads into Australia's mobiles market with a vast range of products and services it has developed in the 2.5 G and 3G areas. With i-mode, it now becomes only one of several companies worldwide capable of providing the full spectrum of handset technologies required for the changing demands of mobile consumers.

i-mode and what it promises to deliver, not only strengthens NEC's position as Australia's fastest growing mobiles handset technology developer but signals to the market, it's eagerness to remain as the world's leading provider of mobile internet technology.

Strongly supported by NEC, Telstra's mobile customers via i-mode will gain easy, quick secure access to a large variety of content offered on its 2.5G and future 3G networks.
