Huawei At The 3GSM World Congress

8th November , 2004

ASIA : The 3GSM World Congress by the GSM Association, took place on 27th Sept 2004 in the Singapore city, with attendance of more than 1000 guests from global telecom industry, including over 60 teleco CEOs. Huawei Technologies sent a high-level delegation to this conference, led by Mr. Chen Zhaohui, Corporate Senior Vice President of Huawei Technologies.

Mr. Chen indicated, in his actively-responded speech titled "Examing the Role for Asian Vendors in global wireless market", that Asia was the largest wireless telecom market in the world, in which the market prosperity brought about the success of numerous telecom operators such as China Mobile, China Unicom, DOCOMO, SK, AIS, and SINGTEL. Furthermore, These successful carrier operations gave a significant boost to the growth of the equipment venders like Huawei Technologies. These Asian equipment suppliers are playing a very important role in the competitive worldwide wireless market, with the strength of excellent services, quality products and cost-effective solutions to quickly meet customers' needs.

In the following round table discussions, CEOs from Malaysia Maxis Mobile, Philippines Smart Communications and India Bharti Enterprises all agreed with Huawei: Asia had become an important part in the world economy, the development of economy would sure compel successful telecom operations and equipment manufactures, and then Asia would function more significantly in the world.

In the exhibition area, Huawei set up the largest exhibition platform in the 3GSM congress to display UMTS end-to-end solution and new GSM solution. In the UMTS terminal area, Lim Chuan Poh, the CEO of the Singapore Telecom Mobile, inserted his UIM card into Huawei UMTS handset, got through the first video call in the 3GSM congress. The clear voice and fluent video inspired praises in the exhibition. While then, the Singapore Telecom had not yet launched the UMTS service, nor had Huawei UMTS handset been tested in Singapore. Therefore the excellent compatibility it performed evoked great interests.

Huawei outstanding performances in the 3GSM Congress caught great attentions from operators. The fast growing of Huawei in the global wireless market is changing the world's perspectives of the Asian Telecom industry.

In the first half of 2004, Huawei wireless has provided mobile telecom solutions, products and service for 140 operators in over 40 countries, with total subscribers of more than 62 million. Its GSM products applied total 200,000 TRXs worldwide, with over 10 million subscribers in GPRS networks. In the UMTS field, Huawei has succeeded in the commercialization in UAE, Hong Kong and Mauritius, becoming one of the world's few equipment suppliers to provide commercial end-to-end solution. All these accomplishments are brought about by its leading R4 SoftSwitch technology. At present, since the commercialization-ready UMTS technology is SoftSwitch-based R4 version, Huawei takes the lead in either technology or application. The only three R4 version UMTS commercial networks are in UAE, Hong Kong and Mauritius. SoftSwitch is the key of the evolution of the GSM core network towards the UMTS core network. To protect investment and roll out more services, GSM operators selected SoftSwitch core network in the network construction initiatively. For example, operators in Thailand, Russia and Pakistan are gradually using the SoftSwitch core network to replace the old circuit core network. China Mobile adopted the SoftSwitch equipment to construct the world largest TMSC, with up to 30,000 E1 on the whole network. So far, Huawei mobile SoftSwitch equipment has applied over 55000 E1 in gateway exchanges and tandem exchanges, with over 3 million subscribers in the local exchanges. Moreover, in the CDMA2000 field, Huawei products have served 52 operators in 37 countries. The service in Portugal made Huawei the first vendor to construct the CDMA network in Western Europe.

2004 is a prosperous year for Huawei. Huawei has turned its role from an Asia telecom equipment supplier to a world mainstream telecom equipment supplier. Huawei is growing fast in the wireless field. It will bring forwards more choices and opportunities for world wireless operators and eventually promote the prosperousness of global wireless operations.
