High-Performance SIM Card IC for 3G Mobile Services

ASIA : Samsung announced the development of a high performance Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card IC.

Samsung further supports card and system designers with its advanced card solution technology to meet the increasing data content of multimedia features such as camera, MP3 music files, game, and m-commerce in the next generation mobile handset market.

Samsung's new advanced SIM card IC, S3FJ9CH, incorporates a System-in-Package (SiP) technology encompassing a 128-Megabyte (MB) NAND flash memory that covers the data storage needs of next-generation multimedia intensive mobile services.

The 128MB density level is over 120-fold that of conventional embedded memory space of memory built-in smart card ICs.

Samsung's new SIM card IC supports high-speed MMC and USB2.0 full-speed interface as well as ISO7816 for enhanced data transmission. The S3FJ9CH also supports enhanced security features. An ARM-based 32-bit SC200 CPU core, a JAVA accelerator, triple-DES and AES algorithms, and PKI crypto processor are built-in to enforce the security measures and stable transmission of personal data.

"The convergence of multiple functions in the mobile handset arena varies from diverse entertainment features to the reliable transaction of personal information," said C. H. Chung, vice president at Samsung Electronics' System LSI division.

"Samsung presents a total smart card IC solution for GSM/GPRS and IMT 2000 user/subscriber identification cards with maximum data storage capacity to fully support the rapidly evolving 3G mobile industry.”

The new Samsung SIM card IC is now sample available for SIM card system providers for evaluation. Samsung plans to promote the application of its new SIM card format for enhanced user friendly services in the future telecommunication environment.
The S3FJ9CH is slated for mass production in the second half of 2005.
The new SIM card IC will be available at the CARTES 2004 exhibition held at Paris, France
