Europe
: Lucent Technologies and Nordisk Mobiltelefon AB (NMAB) today announced
they are conducting a CDMA450 network trial in Finland, delivering
advanced, digital voice and high-speed data services at speeds of
up to 2.4 Megabits per second - the fastest mobile data speeds available
in the country.
Inset
is the Lucent Flexent(R) CDMA450 Modcell ES base station.
This
week, the two companies also are conducting a live, showcase demonstration
of CDMA450 -- third-generation (3G) CDMA2000(R) 1X and 1xEV-DO wireless
technologies deployed in 450 MHz spectrum -- for regulators, business
customers and other invited guests in Tampere.
The trial and
showcase demonstration will provide business customers from industries
including forestry, transportation, farming, tourism, pulp and paper,
and more with an opportunity to see first-hand how a CDMA450 network
can significantly increase productivity and improve business processes
via high-speed data, video, digital voice, and push-to-speak services.
These industries currently rely on older, less-advanced networks that
do not support these more sophisticated services.
"CDMA450
promises to revolutionize the way many industries do business in the
Nordics, especially in previously underserved or unreachable areas,"
said Hans Rundberg, managing director of Lucent Technologies Nordics.
"As the world's leading CDMA450 network infrastructure supplier,
we've witnessed how CDMA450 can meet rural and urban coverage demands
and deliver voice, high-speed data, video or any combination of these
services to businesses and consumers today, while laying the foundation
for voice over IP and other blended, lifestyle-enhancing services
in the future."
For example, the
forestry industry relies on timely harvesting data, which is critical
to their operations. Currently, less-advanced mobile data systems
are used to transmit this data and the process is painfully slow.
CDMA450 can transmit this same data in a tiny fraction of the time,
improving operational efficiency and streamlining business processes.
"Our founding
vision was to provide consumers and professionals in rural areas with
advanced, digital mobile communications services and, with this trial,
we are demonstrating that this vision can become a reality, providing
both mobile telephony and broadband access across the Nordic region,"
said Mr. Arnfinn Roste, chief executive officer and founder of Nordisk
Mobiltelefon AB. "We are excited to demonstrate the capabilities
of CDMA450 with Lucent, and we also are very impressed by the performance
of Lucent's CDMA450 infrastructure and its experience delivering commercial
CDMA450 solutions to operators worldwide."
The CDMA450 trial
covers the Tampere region. Lucent is using laptops equipped with wireless
modem cards and mobile phones to demonstrate high-speed access to
e-mail, Intranets and the Internet; streaming audio and video; video
conferencing and surveillance; push-to-speak capabilities; seamless
roaming between WiFi and CDMA450 networks; mobile video gaming; and
applications for specific vertical industries such as forestry. Lucent
also is conducting interoperability testing with other vendors' networking
equipment to demonstrate the compatibility and flexibility of its
solutions.
CDMA450 is an
ideal technology for providing voice and high-speed data services
in countries with vast territories because it can cost-effectively
provide superior capacity and coverage with fewer wireless base stations
than competing technologies.
Lucent, the first
to deliver CDMA450 solutions globally, has deployed commercial networks
in 450 MHz spectrum for Delta Telecom and Moscow Cellular Communications
-- both part of the Sky Link initiative in Russia -- Zapp in Romania,
Uzbek Telecom in Uzbekistan and Vietnam Power Telecom, and is conducting
numerous CDMA450 trials with customers around the world.
A global
leader in the development of commercial 3G spread-spectrum solutions,
Lucent's Mobility Solutions Group has deployed CDMA2000, CDMA450,
and W-CDMA/UMTS networks with more than 30 mobile operators on the
continents of North and South America, Asia, Europe and in the Australia/New
Zealand region. Lucent also is collaborating with major UMTS/W-CDMA
operators in Asia, Europe and North America on the development of
their 3G networks. Lucent has deployed more than 90,000 spread-spectrum
base stations for mobile operators worldwide, of which 50,000 are
already supporting 3G services.
