J-PHONE to Make “Super Mail” Wireless Notifications Free

22nd November 2002

J-PHONE announced that as of December 1, 2002, customers using J-PHONE’s “Super Mail” (Movie Sha-mail-enabled) packet data service will be able to receive initial message notifications for free.

Inset is J-SH52 Movie Sha-mail-enabled handset, which is manufactured by Sharp Corporation. The handset screen shows a Movie Sha-mail file in playback mode.

J-PHONE’s Super Mail*1 service allows customers to send and receive messages up to 12KB (approximately 6000 full size characters, up to 15KB with Movie Sha-mail) so video messages with sound (Movie Sha-mail) and still pictures (Sha-mail) can be sent as attachments. Packet data communications are currently charged at 0.3 yen per packet (128 bytes).

When receiving a Super Mail, users receive an initial notification from the server mailbox of up to 192 characters*2. From December 1, 2002, users will no longer be billed packet data costs (maximum of 0.9 yen) for receiving this initial notification. Furthermore, those wishing to confirm message delivery will no longer be charged packet data costs (0.3 yen).

This means that all users of J-PHONE’s e-mail services will be able to receive character messages of up to 192 characters and confirm the delivery of sent mails for free. They also have the option of choosing whether to download the remainder of a received message or not.

As the “No. 1” provider of e-mail services and camera phones in Japan, J-PHONE will continue to develop advanced mobile products and services to provide even richer communication options to individuals and businesses.
