Brazilian 3G Market Worth US$ 6 Billion Annually
5th November 2002

Speaking at one of Latin America's biggest telecommunications industry events, "Futurecom" in Florianopolis, Brazil, UMTS Forum Chairman Dr Bernd Eylert welcomed recent confirmation by the Brazilian administration ANATEL that it plans to deploy third generation mobile services in ITU-approved "core" frequency bands, with 2x55 MHz of 3G spectrum now allocated for UMTS.

"This is great news for handset manufacturers as well as operators and developers of 3G services and applications", stated Dr Eylert. "With the Brazilian market now primed for UMTS, vendors will have an opportunity to sell UMTS terminal equipment into this exciting and highly significant marketplace while operators can align their service offering with other countries where they already hold UMTS licenses."

The UMTS Forum forecasts that the Brazilian market for 3G services will be worth some US$ 6 billion annually within the next ten years - representing a quarter of all Latin American 3G operator revenues.
