New 3G High Capacity Femtocell

New 3G High Capacity Femtocell

9th November , 2009

US : A new 3G Femtocell has been released which offers better 3G wireless indoor coverage and advanced 3G services within public spaces and office buildings.

The new Femtocell is released by Airvana and is called the HubBub UMTS High Capacity Femtocell. Each Femtocell can support 16 users at the same time with a range of up to 600 meters. The new 3G Femtocell offers downloads speeds of uo to 22 megabytes per second and upload speeds of up to 6 megabytes per second. The range is of particular interest as it 3 times the range offered by residential femtocells.

In addition, each Femtocell is able to support up to 40 users for low bandwith applications including push email.

Designed to meet the stringent demands of mobile operators who need to deliver improved 3G coverage and advanced services to office buildings and public spaces, the HubBub UMTS High-Capacity Femtocell is fully standards-compliant and features industry-leading concurrent call capacity, range and HSPA performance.

This combination is well suited to offices and public spaces in which many smartphone users will be checking email or updating social networking sites, while others will be conducting voice calls or more intensive data sessions. Like HubBub residential femtocells, the HubBub High-Capacity femtocell can use a standard high-speed Internet connection for backhaul and is compatible with 3GPP Iuh femtocells standards.  It is truly plug-and-play, designed for installation by non-specialized IT staff, significantly lowering the cost of deployment for both operator and end-customer.

The ability of femtocells to help operators cost-effectively improve in-building coverage, call quality and data performance for residential subscribers by using the public internet for backhaul is increasingly being recognized.

However, the range, call capacity, manageability and physical deployment options required to make femtocells a viable technology for use in enterprises and public spaces have until now not been available. Airvana has designed the HubBub UMTS High-Capacity Femtocell to address these specific challenges, opening the door for operators to efficiently deliver improved coverage and performance in both office environments and public spaces, creating opportunities to not only secure new customers and increase average revenue per user (ARPU), but also reduce churn.

The HubBub High-Capacity femtocell is based on a fully programmable platform.  It is software-upgradable to support higher capacities and new features as they become available. This is a direct result of Airvana’s strategy of developing its own baseband and femtocell application software on high-performance commercial microprocessors.  The HubBub High-Capacity femtocell is not constrained to the processing power and features of consumer-grade femtocell chipsets and their associated software.
