Live Market Trial of Motorola’s 3GPP Compliant UMA Solution

29 November , 2005

Europe UK : Motorola announced that following a successful initial six-month trial of its Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) solution, TeliaSonera Denmark is moving to phase two of the trial project - making calls with Motorola A910 handset ( see left ) over the first 3GPP compliant UMA system in an operational network environment.

The market trial is an important step forward in delivering Motorola’s vision of Seamless Mobility incorporating products and services from across the organization. The complete, fully tested UMA solution from Motorola includes network infrastructure, A910 handsets, and integration and deployment services. In addition, Motorola is developing UMA-based connected home solutions to enable seamless access around the home.

For TeliaSonera customers, the UMA solution will offer lower-cost mobile calls with better coverage in the home as well as a seamless mobile experience using a single device, single number, contacts book, voicemail and bill.

“We are very pleased that the first phase of the technical trial in Denmark has proven that users find the system simple to use and attractive in terms of quality of service. In the next phase of the trial we will dig further into the quality and functionality and focus on how easy it is for the user to install the UMA-phone system in their home,” Peter Bredgaard, president of Telia Networks, says.

“With UMA, operators can offer subscribers a cost-effective, seamless communication experience. Together with TeliaSonera we are delighted to combine our expertise in mobile handsets and network convergence to continue testing our commercial UMA solution, further demonstrating our leadership in Seamless Mobility,” said Jose Figueroa, corporate vice president and regional manager, Motorola Networks EMEA.

Motorola’s UMA solution, now being deployed by TeliaSonera Denmark, supports standards including Bluetooth™ and WiFi and allows the use of handsets from multiple vendors. Motorola and TeliaSonera plan to continue working together to assess the future potential of a converged network.

In addition to TeliaSonera, nine other European operators are currently trialing Motorola’s UMA solution.
