Mobile Measurement of DVB Network Coverage

Europe Germany : The new DVB-T Diversity Test Receiver R&S TSM-DVB has been designed for mobile coverage measurements in DVB-T networks. Up to now, broadcasters have performed stationary measurements but mobile measurements are also necessary – especially in digital networks. To meet this need, the handy instrument from Rohde & Schwarz is now available in combination with Coverage Measurement Software R&S ROMES. In a moving vehicle, it provides information about the transmitter signal quality. In addition, coverage and potential error sources can be clearly displayed on a notebook, quickly and economically.

Network coverage in digital TV networks is normally measured in accordance with the CCIR guidelines. To do this, you set up a 10 m high antenna at a test station. A test thus involves an enormous effort and, above all, a lot of personnel. In addition, digital networks require other coverage measurement methods, especially reception tests while the vehicle is moving. The DVB-T Diversity Test Receiver R&S TSM-DVB meets these requirements. During a mobile measurement, it provides quick and reliable measurement values even if the test vehicle reaches speeds of up to 100 km/h. The test system supports all DVB-T modes including the hierarchical modes across all bandwidths of 6 MHz, 7 MHz or 8 MHz. The test instrument is equipped with two antenna inputs and two demodulation channels. Due to its power supply of 12 V, it can be easily connected to a vehicle at any time.

A PC or a notebook equipped with an RS-232-C interface and based on Windows XP Professional is all you need to evaluate the measurement. This means that the data can be gathered during a simple drive and subsequently analyzed by specialists. The R&S TSM-DVB supports measurement parameters such as RF level, modulation error ratio (MER), packet error ratio (PER), bit error ratio (BER) in accordance with Reed-Solomon and C/(N+i) as well as several status indicators (AGC locked, carrier locked, MPEG sync locked, etc) or information about the transport signal (DVB-T mode, code rate, etc).
