Indonesia : netZAP has awarded Alcatel a contract for commercial expansion
of its trial network in Jakarta. Alcatel will design and roll-out
the network with UMTS TD-CDMA equipment from IPWireless. The network
is scheduled for completion before year end with service going live
in January 2006. It is part of a major network roll-out planned for
next year encompassing some additional 150-200 sites to cover a large
area of Jakarta.
UMTS TD-CDMA, the 3GPP
standard for high-speed wireless data, allows operators to deploy
wireless broadband networks to provide subscribers with a broadband
connection that offers the user a broadband experience similar to
DSL, combined with the advantages of a wireless connection. Using
a simple, plug-and-play desktop modem or PC card, subscribers can
enjoy an always-on broadband connection instantly without having to
wait for any physical installation and can immediately enjoy the service
at home, at work, or anywhere in between, even while moving at vehicular
speeds.
netZAP offers various service
plans starting from 384 Kbps from Rp. 400,000 per month. With a 512
Kbps speed, users can download a 1 MB file in 15 seconds, substantially
faster than the typical cable modem's duration of four minutes or
dial-up's seven minutes in Indonesia.
"We are pleased with
the performance of the technology and more importantly, the response
from our trial customers, hence our decision to expand the network.
We are confident that Alcatel, with its close partnership with IPWireless
and experience in working with the UMTS TD-CDMA technology, is the
right partner for this expansion and can meet our target for service
launch in January 2006," said Andre Halim, Chief Executive Officer
of netZAP.
