: Sierra Wireless announced commercial availability of the AirCard®
850 3G wireless wide area network card on Manx Telecom's newly unveiled
HSDPA network on the Isle of Man. This is Europe's first commercial
deployment of fully functional HSDPA network cards and network-wide
HSDPA technology. The AirCard 850 and commercial HSDPA network service
is now available to Manx Telecom customers. When purchased with the
Manx Telecom Pronto Connect Data tariff, these cards will cost £49+VAT.
Out of the box, the AirCard
850 is fully functional on HSDPA, UMTS, EDGE, and GPRS networks. The
AirCard 850 utilizes the 2100 MHz UMTS frequency band and offers average
data rates of 500 to 800 kbps, with bursts to 1.3 Mbps on Manx's HSDPA
network*. Ideal for frequent travelers, the AirCard 850 enables international
roaming on HSDPA and UMTS networks across Europe, and on all four
EDGE and GPRS frequency bands (850, 900, 1800, and 1900 MHz) used
worldwide. The AirCard 850 wireless WAN card is a Type II PC Card
with a slim, unextended design, allowing users to conveniently store
the unit inside the laptop.
Manx Telecom customers
will initially experience peak data speeds of up to 1.3 Mbps with
theoretical speeds on the network of up to 14.4 Mbps available in
the future. For end users, this translates to an experience similar
to a fixed broadband connection while using email, connecting to server-based
corporate applications through a VPN, or accessing the Internet, including
streaming audio and video files with throughput three times faster
than today's commercial 3G UMTS networks.
"We are committed
to maintaining a leadership role in offering customers the best wireless
data technology available, a commitment shared by Sierra Wireless,"
said Dave Williams, group chief technology officer of O2. "With
the launch of the Manx Telecom HSDPA network and the Sierra Wireless
AirCard 850 wireless network card, customers on the Isle of Man can
be the first to use this technology and stay connected to their office
or home with one of the fastest wireless solutions available."
"Our partnership with
Sierra Wireless will enable us to meet customers' increasing demands
for fast and reliable wireless data solutions," said Chris Hall,
managing director of Manx Telecom. "Sierra Wireless has a reputation
for quality and innovation and we want our customers to receive the
best products the market has to offer."
"With the Sierra Wireless
AirCard 850 and the new HSDPA network O2 and Manx Telecom have unveiled,
mobile data subscribers can expect that wirelessly using applications
like music downloads, high-quality video streaming, web browsing,
and VPN access to corporate networks, will offer an end-user experience
similar to that of a fixed broadband connection," said Jim Lahey,
vice president, EMEA, for Sierra Wireless. "Sierra Wireless is
pleased to work with O2 and Manx Telecom to launch service on one
of the most advanced 3G wireless networks available today."
