| 3G Battery Contract |
15th May 2003 |
According to the terms of the contract, Exide will supply FT 12V 105 ( inset ) network power batteries designed to provide emergency backup power. The new contract makes Exide the largest battery supplier for the UMTS in Sweden. UMTS is a third-generation (3G) broadband, packet-based system for the transmission of high volumes of text, digitized audio, video and multimedia. It will play a key role in creating a mass market for high-quality wireless communications worldwide. When UMTS is fully implemented, users of small, wireless devices such as handheld computers and cellular phones can maintain a constant Internet connection anywhere in the world, with global roaming and advanced capabilities. 3G technology already is available in Europe and Japan, and the equipment is starting to appear in the U.S. and other countries. "By 2010, the market for high-quality wireless multimedia communications could exceed two billion users worldwide," said Craig H. Muhlhauser, Chairman and CEO of Exide Technologies. "As one of the world's largest manufacturers of industrial and transportation batteries with an expansive global presence, Exide is in the best position to accelerate the deployment of this much anticipated technology." About Exide Technologies: Exide Technologies, with operations in 89 countries and fiscal 2002 net sales of approximately $2.4 billion, is one of the world's largest producers and recyclers of lead-acid batteries. The company's two global business groups -- industrial energy and transportation -- provide a comprehensive range of stored electrical energy products and services for industrial and transportation applications. Industrial uses include network power applications such as telecommunications systems, electric utilities, railroads, photovoltaic (solar-power related) and uninterruptible power supply (UPS); and motive-power applications for a broad range of equipment uses, including lift trucks, mining vehicles and commercial vehicles. Transportation applications include automotive, heavy-duty truck, agricultural and marine, as well as new technologies being developed for hybrid vehicles and new 42-volt automotive applications. The company supplies both aftermarket and original-equipment transportation customers. |
