LG Electronics Takes No 2 Spot Across all Mobile Phone Technologies in U.S.

15th March , 2006

US : According to a recently released mobile phone market share study from leading information technology market research and advisory firm IDC, LG Electronics MobileComm, Inc. (LG Mobile Phones), secured the number two spot for all mobile phone technologies in U.S. for 2005, selling just over 25 million handsets during the year, increasing its market share to nearly 17 percent.

Fueled by its robust growth with leading handsets such as the V by LG and the VX8100, LG once again has won the largest share of the U.S. CDMA mobile handset market in 2005, selling nearly 19 million units to garner 27.3 percent of total CDMA sales in the U.S. LG's nearest competitor emerged with only 17 percent of the market, solidifying LG's position of the CDMA market throughout 2005. Globally, LG finished the full year with a 20.9 percent CDMA market share, holding the lead as the number one vendor.

In addition to its strong leadership in the CDMA market, LG has continued its impressive growth in the GSM category, retaining its number four position in terms of market share with over 2.2 million GSM handsets shipped in the U.S. for the fourth quarter of 2005. LG's GSM global market share has steadily increased since 2001, and the company's strong growth in the GSM market has LG poised to continue its major expansion into the U.S. GSM space into 2006.

"LG Mobile Phones is pleased to learn that once again, our CDMA handsets have outsold all other brands in the U.S.," said Juno Cho, president, LG Electronics MobileComm U.S.A. Inc. "Our dominance of the U.S. CDMA market throughout the years is very gratifying, as is our continued growth in the U.S. GSM market. We continue to focus on innovation, listening to our customers and working with them to create high quality mobile devices that appeal to a wide range of consumers."

Highly successful LG CDMA models launched to-date in 2005 include the flagship EV-DO-capable VX8100 with MP3 capability, the MM535 1.3 megapixel camera phone, the PM-225 device and The V by LG. The V is the ultimate entertainment device that is EV-DO-capable with a 1.3 megapixel integrated camera and camcorder, full QWERTY keyboard, and MP3 player. Extremely popular GSM handsets launched this year include the EDGE-capable A7110 handset and the stylish and functional L1400i and C1300i models.
