First Impressions Count

My first impression of the Sanyo S750 - oh that's better when you slide the phone open it hides the 24mm external aerial. Brushing the aerial issue aside, this is a stylish phone with stylish looks.

Of course, this is the first ever Sanyo mobile phone to be sold in Europe and yes its a 3G mobile. The Sanyo S750 is available exclusively via Orange.

The S750 has an innovative slide-up opening and comes with a four times zoom dual camera functionality – 1,3 Mpix CMOS (with integrated flash) and 310K pixel CCD. The camera performs well.

Whilst the phone is closed, you have access to 2 soft keys, power/end key, navigation pad, OK key, call key and back/clear key.

The phone has one of the largest screen currently on the market - 2,4 inch high resolution QVGA which has 262.144 colours.

Standby times are 260 hours of UMTS ( 170 minutes of talk ), 100 minutes of video telephony. The power performance on this phone should meet most people's expectations.

The S750 has 8 Mbytes of internal memory and a built-in SD card slot. This amount of on-board memory means you need an SD Memory Card and none is supplied. The SD Card is hot-swappable so no need to turn off your phone to add and remove the card.

More features include 72 polyphonic tones for almost real tunes, Java Game, WAP Browsing, USB connections, MP3-Player and Pictbridge for direct printing of photos on external devices. 2 free games are supplied namely : Reversi ( Othello type fun ) and a golf demo.

Like to connect your S750 to your PC through bluetooth or infra-red (IrDA). That's OK but don't forget that you could need a USB Bluetooth adapter.

But like to connect via USB ? Fat chance unless you already have the USB cable. Surprised to see that one is not supplied. OK jump on the bus or hit the traffic jams to get one. May as well get an SD Card at the same time me thinks.

Is It The Bomb ?

Sanyo have made a great intro into Europe with this handset. The first 3G slider phone and a stylish one too.

Competition in the 3G phone arena is really hotting up. Sony Ericsson ( SE V800 ) and Motorola ( A1000 ) have recently won an award for the above 3G phones. A few months ago the Sanyo S750 may have been the "bomb" but not quite now.

The Sanyo S750 handset has a lot going for it yet cost-saving ideas like no SD Card or USB Cable drive me bonkers. Small issues like this can put people off a phone quite easily. Try not to look at the external aerial if they put you off.

All said and done this is a very good handset with stylish looks, a touch of exclusivity as the only 3G slider phone currently available, and a top-notch on board camera and a really big screen. A good buy.
