Africa : Harris Corporation has been selected by Umniah Mobile Company in Jordan to supply and install Harris' network backbone and cellular backhaul services. Umniah will use Harris' TRuepoint(TM) next-generation microwave digital radio to provide the flexibility to grow its customer network while supporting its 3G deployment. The Umniah network will be the largest TRuepoint network in the Middle East and North Africa. The operator was awarded its GSM license by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission in August of 2004 and plans to target Jordan's sizable youth sector. Umniah predicts mobile penetration will grow from 20 percent to between 45 and 50 percent within seven years. "We
chose Harris because of the technical superiority of its products and
the flexibility it provides to accommodate our aggressive launch schedule,"
said Michael Dagher, CEO of Umniah. "The existing players are well
established in 2G, and we are working with Harris to deploy 3G voice
and data services to meet increasing market demand and create a significant
technological edge for our services." Mr. Dagher, a veteran in the telecommunications industry, and his Kuwaiti partners, the AlGhanim Group, are investing JD250 million in Umniah Mobile Company, which is the newest mobile service operator in Jordan. The company is expected to create hundreds of job opportunities for the local market and boost investment in the Jordanian telecommunications sector. Umniah also is expected to develop the telecommunications sector through enhanced customer services, improved rates, an innovative management style, development of its human resources, and superior technology. Harris Microwave Communications leads the wireless backhaul industry with its newest product family, TRuepoint(TM), the first universal platform for point-to-point digital communications. TRuepoint's modular, software- selectable architecture is able to seamlessly switch between PDH and SDH applications, enabling service providers to use a universal platform to deliver multiple applications throughout their networks. |
