Inset is Berndt Baumgartl, president of the Mobile Division who is quoted below. Specifically, the demonstration showcases fully functional 3G UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) network infrastructure using HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) to connect to both a 3G mobile phone as well as an HSPDA data card that can be connected to a laptop's PC Card slot. HSDPA is the next step in the evolution of 3G technology, capable of delivering data up to ten times faster than UMTS alone. The live demonstrations using the base station and the data card, both from Siemens, successfully enable high-speed data transfer via an HSDPA network to a notebook with an HSDPA card in its PC Card slot. UMTS and HSDPA enable a variety of significant customer benefits. These range from high-speed access to the Internet and wireless video and audio for business customers to services such as high-resolution digital image transfer, full-motion video and advanced interactive gaming for consumers. "Consumers using this technology can expect to experience high speed network access anywhere a 3G wireless connection is available," said Berndt Baumgartl, president of the Mobile Division, Siemens Communications, Inc. "Our wireless network technology and our new HSDPA data card provide an end-to-end solution to our carrier customers, providing consumers with high-speed data connectivity and Internet access on the road, at home, or in the office." Two variants of the HSDPA data card from Siemens are expected be available for commercial use in the second half of 2005, with model DC16 featuring W-CDMA connectivity at 850/1900 MHz for North America and model DC10 featuring W-CDMA connectivity at 2100 MHz for Europe and Asia. Both models fit into the PC Card slot in notebook computers and are equipped with quadruple band GSM technology (850/900/1800/1900 MHz), making them suitable for use in all GSM, GPRS and EDGE networks around the world. Additionally, both are based on Data Suite software and support simple plug-and-play functionality with the Windows(TM) 2000 and Windows(TM) XP operating systems. |
