Java White Paper Published by 3G Americas

US : 3G Americas today published a comprehensive white paper on the wireless Java(TM) technology ecosystem -- the de facto standard for developing and delivering mass-market mobile applications.

Java is expected to reach 1.5 billion consumers by 2007 according to some industry analysts. The paper entitled, The Wireless Java(TM) Application Environment: An Executive Overview details the areas of: Java standards development; the role of technology suppliers and application developers; testing and certification; developers? tools; and various deployment scenarios for operators.

?Java is a critical element in stimulating the adoption of mobile data services for GSM operators today,? stated Chris Pearson, President of 3G Americas. ?More than 110 operators worldwide have already deployed Java services, and there are more than a half billion J2ME-capable* mobile devices in 399 unique models. The magnitude of Java services growth is remarkable as operators are expected to increase these service revenues to $15 billion by 2008, according to some industry analysts.?

Pearson continued, ?Java technology is adaptable, secure and ubiquitous - offering new opportunities and benefits to the entire ecosystem of mobile operators, application developers and content providers. Our industry strives to deliver more compelling mobile data services to customers and the Java platform is a true enabler.?

Some of the key observations and conclusions of the paper include:

Java offers new business opportunities to mobile operators by increasing network traffic, encouraging use of premium services, and allowing revenue-sharing with content providers.
Because Java is an open, widely-used and secure language and operating environment, it is familiar to some 4.2 million software developers.
J2ME is not a single specification, but a collection of technologies and specifications designed for different parts of the small device market. J2ME has an installed base in 40 percent of all mobile handsets today.
The various Java runtime environments allow it to be used in a wide range of hardware environments, from inexpensive consumer phones to smartphones, PDAs, and all the way up to desktops and mainframes.
J2ME can be described as ?learn-once, write-anywhere? because after a developer learns the Java platform they can develop integrated end-to-end systems, not just individual applications.
The secure licensing of applications and content is assured through Java-integrated enhancements to the SIM-based smart card technology (JSR177), which protects developers? assets from piracy.
The Wireless Java(TM) Application Environment paper was prepared by members of 3G Americas with contributions from Sun Microsystems and MForma, and is currently available for free download at the 3G Americas? website: www.3gamericas.org.
