Video Streaming on 3G Mobile Phones

31st March , 2004

US : Addressing an industry-wide need for real-time performance in Flash memory management software, Datalight, a market leader in embedded systems software, today announced the immediate availability of Multimedia FlashFX(TM). This next-generation FlashFX software targets device OEMs implementing applications that require multithreaded real-time performance such as streaming video.

Multimedia FlashFX allows flash read operations to preempt flash write or erase operations, resulting in a seamless media viewing experience for end users. With off-the-shelf support for multiple real-time operating systems and a wide variety of flash memory parts, Multimedia FlashFX is an ideal solution for 3G mobile phone manufacturers and other OEMs who want to get products to market quickly.

"Multimedia FlashFX sets new standard of real-time performance for flash management software," said David Cloutier, president of Datalight. "This newest version of FlashFX demonstrates our firm commitment to developing software components that anticipate our customer's evolving needs."

Enea Integrates Multimedia FlashFX with OSE Real-Time Operating System

Enea Data AB, a world leading supplier of high-availability real-time operating systems and consulting services for the telecom industry, is the first vendor to integrate Multimedia FlashFX with its RTOS. Sony-Ericsson is currently developing a line of consumer-oriented 3G mobile phone utilizing Enea's OSE RTOS with Multimedia FlashFX.

OSE is a memory-protected RTOS optimized for high-availability, high-reliability distributed communications systems. OSE features a power management system that extends battery life, a crash-safe file system with flash support, and a complete networking solution with TCP/IP and other networking/security protocols. It also features dynamic download capability, which enhances mobile device flexibility by enabling new applications to be downloaded to systems as they operate in the field.

"Multimedia FlashFX enables our customers to differentiate their 3G handset designs by adding exciting new applications like streaming video," said Mike Christofferson, Product Marketing Manager at Enea Embedded Technology. "The OSE RTOS, together with Multimedia FlashFX, provides a solid foundation for building reliable, flexible 3G mobile phones that provide smooth streaming video playback with minimal delays."

Availability and Pricing

Multimedia FlashFX for the OSE RTOS is available immediately. Multimedia FlashFX for other operating systems will ship in Q2.
