| 3G UMTS Video Streaming Analysis |
8th March , 2004 |
Europe : To facilitate UMTS network planning and the setup of 3G mobile radio networks, Rohde & Schwarz recently introduced the compact measurement system UMTS PN Scanner. Consisting of measurement hardware and software, the system can be connected to a PC or laptop for test drives. The Radio Network Analyzer R&S TSMU is compact in design, allowing greater mobility than previously possible. Thus, UMTS base stations can be tested for signal strength and density. The powerful platform has now been expanded to include the software options R&S ROMES-AS6 for CW measurements or level measurements in the range from 80 MHz to 3 GHz and R&S ROMES-Z7 for measuring picture transmission quality (video streaming analysis). The compact UMTS measurement system consists of the UMTS version of Coverage Measurement Software R&S ROMES, the Radio Network Analyzer R&S TSMU and a GPS navigation system. The R&S TSMU – featuring a convenient size of 150 mm in width, 80 mm in height and 170 mm in depth – offers exceptional performance. Weighing only 1.5 kg, the instrument requires only 680 mA at an operating voltage of 12 V, making it ideal for mobile and portable use. The system can be connected to a PC or laptop via a FireWire interface in accordance with the IEEE 1394 standard. The system measures all RF parameters of the UMTS network. The actual carriers of the UMTS signal, the pseudo random noise (PN) codes, are detected and determined along with their power, scrambling code, and quality parameters or with their S/N ratios and timing. All data can be immediately analyzed or stored for subsequent processing. A wide variety of displays ensures that UMTS parameters and network coverage quality are easy to examine. The transmission of pictures and video is presenting new requirements in the development of UMTS networks. An additional option for the measurement system is now available for this purpose: Software R&S ROMES-Z7 complements the platform by measuring video quality, including in the transmission of videos in MPEG4 format. Up to four mobile devices with dial-in function in GSM, GPRS, HSCSD, EDGE, IS-95, cdma2000 or UMTS networks can be tested simultaneously. R&S ROMES-AS6 – another new software option for the R&S TSMU – makes CW measurements possible with the R&S TSMU for the first time. Thus, RF levels in different bandwidths can be measured in all GSM and UMTS/WCDMA technologies, plus in other bands. The receive range is from 80 MHz to 3 GHz. The extremely fast measurement speed of up to 10 000 measurements per second is ideal for mobile applications. Even at higher vehicle speeds, it ensures exact measurements, which can even be performed at short intervals. The compact R&S TSMU measurement system, including its basic software and software options, is now available from Rohde & Schwarz. |
