J-Phone Hit Sha-mail Wireless High

27th March 2003

Tokyo : J-PHONE announced that Sha-mail picture messaging enabled handsets exceeded the 9 million mark. Since topping 8 million in January 2003, Sha-mail subscribers increased by 1 million in approximately two months, bringing the number of Sha-mail users to approximately 65% of J-PHONE’s total subscriber base.

The rapid growth of “Sha-mail” can be attributed to the following:

• Spread of Sha-mail communications
Launched June 2001, Sha-mail is a service that allows people to take pictures with a camera-equipped mobile phone and send them as e-mail attachments. Attracted to its ease-of-use, greater numbers of customers have recognized and adopted the Sha-mail brand, resulting in continued rapid expansion. In addition to being able to send pictures to other J-PHONE users, the @Sha-mail service allows users to send photos to subscribers of other mobile operators. Furthermore, J-PHONE further enhanced Sha-mail communication possibilities by introducing @Sha-mail album, a service that allows users to save and upload photos to create and display original photo albums online. Sha-mail applications that utilize the J-SKY mobile internet service such as Fukidashi [speech bubble] Sha-mail, and Anime [animated] Sha-mail are also available.

• Extensive lineup of Sha-mail handsets
J-PHONE has the industry’s largest lineup of camera phones with 24 different models, of which 6 are Movie Sha-mail (video messaging) enabled. Subscribers can choose from among a wide variety of handsets with mobile cameras that offer zooming, close-ups, frame setting, lighting and other photographic functions.

• From Sha-mail to Movie Sha-mail
With the launch of its mobile packet data service in March 2002, J-PHONE marked another milestone in mobile communications by launching Movie Sha-mail, a service which enables users to send and receive e-mails with attachments containing audio/video messages of up to five seconds in length, thereby offering expanded possibilities for expression. With its 6 Movie Sha-mail handsets, J-PHONE now has 1.67 million Movie Sha-mail subscribers, approximately 12% of its customer base.
