Samsung 3G Partnership

21st March 2003

Starent Networks Corporation and Samsung Electronics announced a partnership to deliver next generation infrastructure solutions for Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) mobile wireless carriers.

Inset is the Starent ST16 Intelligent Mobile Gateway.

Under the terms of the new agreement, Starent Networks has started supplying the Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) for worldwide resale and the two companies are jointly developing the Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN). These solutions are based on the Starent ST16 Intelligent Mobile Gateway platform, which connects mobile operators’ radio networks with IP core networks, enabling new voice, data, integrated voice and data, and multimedia services for wireless subscribers. These products will be in major carrier trials in early spring.

Starent Networks already provides its ST16 Intelligent Mobile Gateway as a key element for Samsung’s CDMA2000 network offerings, which includes Packet Data Serving Node (PDSN) and Home Agent (HA). The success of the companies’ existing relationship and Starent Networks’ leading-edge technology cemented the new undertaking. The agreement will provide WCDMA carriers the underlying infrastructure for value-added services and address their need for a high-performance, carrier-class platform.

“Our experience with Starent Networks’ ST16 Intelligent Mobile Gateway has demonstrated that it is foremost in the market for innovation and technical excellence,” said Chang Soo Lim, vice president, Network Systems Division, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. “The GGSN and SGSN solutions further allow Samsung and Starent Networks to expand into new markets while delivering even more advanced, revenue generating services to wireless carrier customers.”

The relationship calls for Starent Networks to provide the complete GGSN solution, while jointly developing the SGSN on the Starent ST16 platform. As a major supplier of wireless carrier equipment, Samsung will also provide significant performance and interoperability testing for the solution.

Samsung is a major global supplier of infrastructure equipment for wireless networks and took a leading role in the deployment of the world’s first CDMA2000 1X network in Korea. Samsung is also the world’s largest producer of CDMA mobile phones and in 2002 became the third-largest mobile phone manufacturer.

“Samsung’s selection of the Starent platform for their CDMA2000 and WCDMA data core network offerings validates Starent Networks competitive advantages and provides us with significant access to leading wireless carriers around the globe,” said Ashraf Dahod, president, Starent Networks Corporation. “Furthermore, working together allows us to considerably increase research, development and product testing capabilities.”

WCDMA, officially known as IMT-2000, is a third-generation (3G) mobile wireless technology providing high-speed mobile wireless communications for the Internet, images, video, multimedia, voice and other high-bandwidth applications. The technology has been selected by major wireless carriers around the world including: AT&T Wireless and Cingular in North America; China Mobile, NTT DoCoMo and SK IMT in Asia; and virtually all European carriers. WCDMA can support communications at up to 2 Mbps (local area access) or 384 Kbps (wide area access).

Starent ST16 Intelligent Mobile Gateway
The Starent ST16 Intelligent Mobile Gateway is designed to enhance the capabilities and experience of the mobile subscriber while increasing the carriers’ profitability. The ST16 system fully addresses mobile network requirements, including multimedia service delivery, mobility, capacity and scalability, enhanced billing, carrier-class availability and a clear migration to an all-IP network.

The system can provision multiple functions to offer unique data, voice, and integrated voice and data services. These functions include: Packet Data Serving Node (PDSN), Home Agent (HA), GPRS Gateway Support Node (GGSN), Serving Gateway Support Node (SGSN), Wireless Media Gateway, Signaling Gateway, Media Server, and Application Server.

Additionally, the product delivers a new level of network intelligence by enabling in-depth interaction with, and inspection of, subscriber sessions, services and other network elements. This interaction provides insight to network activity, allowing the mobile operator to target services, enhance billing capabilities, increase network efficiency and create an exceptional user experience.
