| BenQ High Hopes In Wireless Phone Market |
27th March 2003 |
"Thailand is one of the leading countries for this industry, and the company is confident about the Thai economy and its market potential," said Christopher Chen, managing director of BenQ (Thailand) Co which entered the Thai market last month. BenQ's IT products include LCD monitors, plasma displays, scanners and storage drives, as well as digital cameras, LCD TVs, DVD players and computer notebooks. It also manufactures mobile phones with both GSM- and CDMA-based technology. Mr Chen said each segment -- IT, lifestyle digital and communications -- was expected to contribute equally to the projected revenue in the coming year when BenQ would focus on building brand awareness in the country. The parent, founded in 2001, has established a strong base in Taiwan and China and is now looking at promising markets in Asia and Europe. The direction for this year would emphasise high-potential markets in the region including Thailand and Australia, he said. Of the mobile phone business, Mr Chen said BenQ planned to launch six or seven handset models in the next 12 months, targeting the high- and middle-end market. "Compared with the other countries in this region, the Thai market is big enough, and is expected to [continue] growing fast, driven by domestic demand," Mr Chen said. He added that the GSM handsets would be its main product in the initial launch stage, given the huge room in the Thai market. The advantages of its product would be the unique functions in every model, he said, adding that BenQ would not compete in pricing strategy. He said its products were very successful in Taiwan and that he expected the same success here. Mr Chen said the first handsets were scheduled to hit store shelves in April. Globally, BenQ projects sales of 14 million handsets this year. By Mongkol Jullayothin, Bangkok Post, Thailand |
