Orange UK Offer Extra Wireless Content

26th March 2003

Mobile Commerce and Orange UK have reached an agreement designed to give Orange customers access to an expanded range of approved third party applications.

Inset is Steve Page, CEO Mobile Commerce who is quoted below.

Specifically, the agreement enables Mobile Commerce to use Orange UK's location feed to offer selected services such as information on
nearby bars, restaurants and clubs. The agreement means that through Mobile Commerce's Application Programming Interface (API) developers will now be able to offer services for customers of all of the UK mobile networks.

Third party services already offered by Mobile Commerce include Metro Text
and Text Hotspots. Metro Text is based on the Metro CrushGuide publication
and CrushGuide's 5000 venue database of reviews and information, a
comprehensive independent guide to bars, clubs and pubs in London. Mobile
Commerce has provided a fully managed service to provide a location-based
SMS application for bars and pubs in the London area. The service allows
users to obtain relevant bar or pub information based on keyword input and
integration of an automated handset location feed from their network
service. Text Hotspots gives information and directions to the nearest
celebrity hangouts in London via a simple SMS request. It is the result of a
partnership between Mobile Commerce and award-winning celebrity website
PeopleNews.com.

"Content providers can now come to a single source to launch a
location-enabled service to the whole UK mobile population. This is the
first time cross-network location has been possible and really is extremely
exciting as we believe that network agnostic services will push forward the
mass take-up of location-based services," said Steve Page, CEO of Mobile
Commerce. "The industry will see an explosion in the launch of services as
third parties will no longer need to establish technical and commercial
agreements with each operator. We are delighted to be working with Orange to
make this possible."

Ben Hirsch, Client Development Manager, Orange UK, said: "Increasingly
customers want to use their phones for more than just voice communication.
Orange is committed to offering a range of useful data services suited to
their needs. Location information not only provides customers with exciting
new applications but also enriches the existing services available."

Mobile Commerce receives location data from the network in the form of map
co-ordinates and translates this into a position relative to a nearby
landmark, such as an underground station or local point of interest, thereby
adding value to the location feed received through the API. Services include
an initial consent process to ensure that a user's location information is
only requested from the network in response to a valid service request.
Mobile Commerce uses proprietary search and indexing technology to ensure
the user receives the most relevant information to match their request. Data
management and intelligent categorisation tools enable the company to
aggregate data from various sources to provide rich content for SMS
delivery
