Billing Solution Bridges Gap Between 3G and Wi-Fi

Usha Communications Technology (UshaComm) and The Management Network Group
(TMNG) announced that UshaComm's Unicorn Release 5 ( see inset ), an advanced billing solution, was showcased in a combined Wi-Fi 802.11 and CDMA 1xRTT demonstration of next generation wireless services at CTIA.

The Wireless Technology Lab, a partnership between TMNG, Fluor and inCode
Telecom Group, will host the demonstration. The demonstration will simulate
both an end-user Wi-Fi hotspot and a roaming ISP experience. This will
incorporate using an 802.11 infrastructure and a 1xRTT network connection to
generate usage data. Unicorn's rating and billing functionality will then
generate a convergent bill of CDMA 1xRTT and 802.11 data sessions using
connection-specific rating methods (occasion, capacity, duration, and flat
rate).

"The demo's purpose was to overlay end-to-end business processes, such as
provisioning, authentication and billing on 802.11 and 1xRTT technologies,"
said Ron Angner, TMNG Wireless Practice Leader. "The demo showed the rating
flexibility of Unicorn and its ability to support a single account, using
differing rating philosophies for each technology on the same bill."
