Where Is My 3G Phone ?

4th March 2003 by Kevin Thomas of 3G

Hutchison 3G UK ( now 3 UK ) confirmed that 3G in the UK was commercially launched on 03-03-2003. But I have to ask myself where is my 3G phone?

To mark the occasion of the launch, Patricia Hewitt ( UK Secretary of Trade and Industry ) held a 3G video call with Canning Fok, Group MD of Hutchison ( see left ) and also made another 3G video call to a DTI colleague outside on the pavement at 3’s store in Oxford Street, London.

In reality, the snag is that you or I won’t have a 3G Handset for a few weeks or more. Well, that’s not too bad yet we need to know why the handsets aren’t available now ?

When the handsets do arrive will there be just one model type to choose from or will the 3 phones from the range be available and what quantity will be available for the public. 3 is taking pre-orders – but a word of caution if you are not based in an initial 3G service area, I doubt you will get a phone.

Hutchison 3G is a strange company when it comes to communication and as far as I know they have not advised why the handsets are delayed. We can only guess – is it because they have cash flow problems and can’t pay for them ? or are there more design bugs with the handsets ? or is simply that the manufacturer has a few hiccups ? I for one, simply don’t know.

The reasons why the network is not initially rolled-out nationally, is of course, more understandable. Of the thousands of new masts which were needed to be put up, Hutchison 3G has been involved in many disputes and permission to site the masts has sometimes been refused by local authorities. Another reason is the volume of work involved in setting up a bran new network.

Hutchison 3G has been taking pre-orders for the 3G service for some time now but has not confirmed any volumes. It would be nice to see if the UK public and particularly the early adopters have coughed up any cash so far. I do not know the answer to this either.

I am sorry to be a bit negative today but I am frustrated. Frustrated that I do not have a 3G phone even though originally I was expecting to own one in 2002. I pre-registered for a 3G phone with the company via the internet yet have heard nothing more. Maybe they have excluded me from being supplied one ?
