T-Phone Co., Ltd. announced that the cumulative number of "Sha-mail"-enabled mobile phones in service reached 4 million as of March 14, 2002.
The mobile phone with Sha-mail function first went on sale in November 2000. It is equipped with a built-in camera, which enables users to send and receive e-mails attached with photos taken with the handset. The number of sales reached 1 million in June 2001, and is growing constantly by about 1 million operating units per three-month period. There are currently 11 Sha-mail handsets by five manufacturers in the market. The manufacturers are improving the image quality on Sha-mail-enabled phones by having the liquid-crystal display show a maximum of 260,000 colors from 256 colors at the beginning, and by developing models that have valid pixels of 310,000. J-Phone on March 1, 2002 started "Movie Sha-mail," a service that enables filming of motion pictures, and hopes for more diffusion in the market. Movie Sha-mail service is available with packet-supported phones with a built-in mobile camera, and users can send or receive e-mails with motion pictures with voice. The maximum length of motion picture to be attached is 5 seconds.
