2.5G Mobile TV on Microsoft Devices

29th June , 2006

Europe UK : ROK Entertainment Group, the UK-based mobile technology development company, today announced it had added 12 new Microsoft Windows devices to its list of compatible handsets able to receive 2.5G mobile TV services.

“We’re delighted to include Microsoft devices into our compatibility list as this further extends our reach into a new demographic of mobile device users” said Jonathan Kendrick, Chairman and CEO of ROK.

While mobile TV has, until now, been seen an inevitability, it has mostly been understood to be a 3G opportunity. It is estimated that just 100 million of the 2.2 billion people worldwide with a mobile phone have a 3G account. The breakthrough of the patent-pending technology behind ROK TV allows for the streaming of live and ‘on-demand’ content to mobile phones over GPRS - and it is GPRS through which the vast majority of mobile customers worldwide would access data.

“To be able to provide 2.5G mobile TV over GPRS right now represents a huge opportunity for networks and carriers to engage with the bulk of their customers and realise new business beyond just talk and text and the occasional ringtone or short video-clip purchase” added Kendrick “and we’re fully occupied in helping selected networks around the world to realise this new revenue stream through licensing both our technology and, in certain cases, our channels as well”.

ROK TV is available in the UK as a network-agnostic 2.5G alternative to the various 3G mobile TV services and includes such channels as CNN, ITN, Sports News TV, Cartoon Network and National Geographic as well as Reality TV, amongst other, and can be subscribed to for just £0.99p per channel per month via www.rok.tv.
